read below about changes being made to military id's/cac cards:

no, go when you need to renew your card.
if you are a retiree with an indefinite
expiration date and wish to replace your card
with one without an ssn, the earliest you
may do so is january 2010.

cards and teslin cards will be issued at over
1,500 rapids id card centers worldwide.
what should i bring?
two forms of id from the omb i-9 document
list. one must be a federal or state issued

Very interesting info, Thanks for the post!
hmmm... well i dunno when it will take place however, as I went to get a new I.D. on Thursday and lo and behold my SSN was in its glory on the back.

...just another incentive not to misplace it
ha! actually the reason I got a new i.d. was because after installing the CAC reader, it didnt work......mainly because whoever inputted the info to begin with assigned me the wrong email address....so the CAC couldnt register on AKO etc.
Now its all fixed and i'm able to log into AKO etc. w/out having to type in that 14 digit password.
Moral of the story: make sure ALL info is correct because it can cause errors.
