CA Furnishing Number

Has any of the NP's in this forum who lives outside of California ever applied for a California Furnishing Number? I already have a NP license in that state but still haven't applied for a "furnishing number". The requirements seem ridiculous coming from a state where NP's can immediately prescribe medications after being certified as long as they have a collaborative agreement with a physician.

It sounds like I need to submit copies of laws pertaining to NP prescribing in the state I'm endorsing my license from in addition to copies of collaborative agreement (makes sense!), standardized procedures (what the heck is that?), proof of having been supervised by a physician for at least 6 months, and proof of having completed a pharmacology course.

Makes me wonder if it's worth it to even apply from out of state or wait it out until I'm working in California, work with a physician for six months, and then apply.

Welcome to the Peoples Republic of California, Comrade! Remember, in California, APN's do not "prescribe" as we are not qualified under the laws to do so. NP's "furnish" which is to make a medication or device "available" to clients in strict accordance with the standardized procedure.

BTW, a standardized procedure is an instrument that allows a RN or APN to practice medicine without a medical license because the former board (all but one who were recently fired) consider the practice of APN's as trully the practice of medicine. Consequently, anything that a nurse does which meets the broad definition of practicing medicine must be covered under an approved SP. SP's may be process oriented (Google Rebeca Zettler process oriented protocols) or disease specific.

Hopefully, with the new board coupled by more aggressive nursing support, they will be a bit more proactive and do away with this mickey mouse furnishing biz and provide for a real prescriptive authority. Unfortunately, many APN's who are not in tune with their nursing roots believe that they are practicing medicine, which of course solidifies the need for SP's and furnishing provisions because, after all, we are merley medical technicians.

Didn't know there's so much "jumping hoops" over there to practice as a NP. I wonder why the Pearson Report gave CA a higher mark than MI when we have "independent practice" here with the exception of having to be subjected to a "delegated" prescriptive authority. So do you wait six months to get this "Furnishing License" then? I can try to whip up all sorts of documents from here in MI to prove that I have "experience" writing prescriptions but it seem like too much trouble. I'll have to wait and see. My future employer says there is already a "standardized procedure" document that is institutionally approved. I guess that's one hurdle down.

Sorry..this is not appropriate place for me to write down this for reply.

But I need an ACNP to interview with some questions. I'm a first year ACNP student.

Do you mind for me steal your precious 10 mins, plz?

Anyone having same trouble with getting furnishing number in California? I can't find a physician who would be willing to supervise me for atleast 6months, so I can fulfill the requirement. I tried post-MS @ UCSF and all the community clinics in the Eastbay. No luck. I'm ready to give up. Any suggestions? Help!

The usual route is the physician or group practice who brings a new grad NP on board provides the 6 months of "furnishing" supervision and signs off on the application form. Experienced NP's from out of state can ask their previous collaborating physician to sign off on the application form. It's definitely a hassle and I'm glad I've got mine.
