Busy morning

Published

Yesterday was a busy day. I'm externing in the NICU and we had 5 c-sections with admits to us (not counting the ones for NBN) before noon. We are an 8 bed Level IIb NICU in a suburban community hospital, so this was crazy busy for us! And, all 5 sections were the same OB! One was twins as well. I went and caught two of the sections myself. Now, none of these kids were really all that sick, but transitions are transitions and so we were busy. Our 8 bed NICU had 12 babies in it when I left last night!

I've been "complaining" (Complaining may be strong, but when you're a student, you really want it to be busy :chuckle) that it's been really slow (I know, never use the "s" word or the "Q" word) so you could say it's a case of "be careful what you wish for" but I love deliveries and transitions! I would love if every day was like this. Like I said, after transition, most of these kids were fine and needed very little. Most will probably go home within a week or two. So, the morning was busy with deliveries, and the afternoon slowed down to a nice even pace. That's a perfect day for me! :D

Glad to hear it picked up a little for ya!:w00t:

I hope it stays more like this. Honestly, most of the time (sometimes slow is nice) I'd prefer to have either a few really sick kids that need a lot or lots of new admissions of kids who after transition only need a little for a short time. It's having only kids who need a little for a long time that I don't really care much for. I guess that's my ER background! I like the really critical cases that require a lot of 1:1 time, but if that's not the case, I'd rather just transition them and send them out! :chuckle

Just like the old ER motto: "Treat 'em and Street 'em".... That's what I like about my unit's transitional nursery. Get 'em from L&D, patch em up, and sent them down to the main unit.

Exactly! I like the longer term kids as well, if they need a lot. It's those in between feeder-growers that I don't really love.

Wow, Bryan...seems you are really hopping! It seems as though we are starting to hit the heavy baby season (at least it is here in FLA). We are actually on stand by for two sets of quads...first set is at 25 weeks gestation and the second is about 4 weeks behind.

It's just so exciting. It's the first job I've had that I can't wait to go back to work (and I'm not even a nurse yet!).

We've actually got two sets of triplets coming this summer. We've only got one MFM guy so far, but he's got a fairly busy practice (he did the 5 sections the other day) for one MD. He's got two sets of triplets coming, but they probably won't be here until August when I'll be done with my externship.

A lot of triplets like to make an early entrance.... you just might get to see them!

We had 13 admits from L&D, one set of quads, a set of trips, and then a 2 sets of twins, and 2 singles. The next day we got 6 admits in 1 hour but one was a set of quints! We went from no census to understaffed in 24 hours!

Its baby time.....
