Burnout

What specific filed do nurses get burnout? I am thinking may be ICU is the most stressful unit. I have to do presentation on this. Any idea p/s. By the way I am nursing student at Gonzaga University first year.

I happen to think that in addition to the actual job stresses and pressure the way a person handles life in general contributes to whether or not they will burn out. How is the person's coping skills? There are outside factors such as family life, financial issues, personal health concerns etc. also that will effect burnout.

I don't think anyone can say with any confidence that one unit is ALWAYS harder than another. I've worked in 3 units now, one as a student and two since I graduated. One was stressful because of the patient load. One was stressful because of the patient acuity. And the one I'm on now is stressful for a combination of the two. I think what contributes to burnout more than a specific unit or area of nursing is how well any given nurse fits into and adapts to any given area, and how well that nurse copes in general. I can easily see why people would get burned out on my new unit - but I love and and get excited about going to work. So it's just a matter of fit and preference. What is exhaustingly difficult for one person might have just the right amount of activity for someone else. What is frighteningly dull for one person might be exactly the right environment for someone else. Every unit has its challenges and its beauties and to be honest I find it a little off-putting to suggest that one area or another is more "to blame" for new nurse burnout. They all are, if they're the wrong spot for the person working there.
