If you don't mind a female answering...here's my :twocents:

Besides proper nutrition, adequate hydration, exercise, hobbying, that sort of thing, I'm assuming you've already thought of since you're a nurse, how about counseling of some sort? I know you may be a bit resistent since guys in general tend to not like talk therapy, but it has helped me a lot in the twenty years of nursing I've been blessed to sometimes hate, sometimes enjoy. Perhaps you need to figure out what areas you can cut back in besides your job to allow more free time to just .... be! Or is it the profession itself? Or have you stayed on at a job too long and need a fresh start in something altogether different than what you're doing now? Remember, there's a plethora of nursing jobs these days. Are you in a hospital setting right now? Plenty of ideas, unsure of what it is you do exactly that you're burned out on....keep us updated. Not a good thing to keep it bottled up....good luck!

I don't know about nursing burnout and the resources available (I'm sure there's a ton) but I can relate as an EMT. After 10+ years as an EMT I got burned out as a result of back to back tragic calls involving kids. I took time off (3wks) to regroup and I utilized the confidential EMS crisis intervention team that was available to all EMS providers 24/7. Their support and encouragement was incredible and I got through it. During nursing school and now working some of the things I do is exercise away my stress (I enjoy jogging), utilize my support system when I need to vent, not picking up all the extra shifts available, not working nights anymore, and of course eating right, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, etc. etc. Hope this helps! I'm excited about making the career change to nursing and hope it is as rewarding as EMS was.

Find a hobby, make time for a vacation far away from work...... I personally plan my next vacation on the way home from the one I'm on, it gives me something to look forward to. Even a short trip where you can get your mind off work. Don't allow yourself to take work home with you, even though it's our tendency. Even if I'm approaching burnout, I find myself itching to get back to work once I'm off for a while. I do miss my babies in NICU!!
