Hi there,
Just the latest update from communications from my recruiter.
[pasting my post from a just written reply]
Well, found out today that I will not be able to amend my date to ship until it is time to ship, (however I will not know when that time is before August 2007 and it maybe September or it may be January 2008).
Much as I hhhaaate to do it, I sent my request for release from IRR and my sustainment status for the Army Nurse Corps. The reasons are for financial hardship and academic timeline completion of June 2008. There is not a chance that I can afford to sit in limbo with student loans due and rent and so forth, until Jan 2008 and most hospitals require new grads to sign a contract for more than the 5 months I'd need to make the Jan 2008 OBLC.
Also, since I have time until Jan I added the FNP certificate to my courses in order to hold my loans in deferrment AND earn the FNP.
It is a waste of all that hard work everyone did, which will only need to be repeated all over again, pretty much right away.

p.s. thanks for listening
p.p.s. since I am on IRR and do not have duty assignment or orders or even anticipate them I chose the DoD 1332.30, (was that right or will I need to re-send an updated letter?)
Gennaver, I am so sorry to hear about your dilemma. You may not remember, but you answered some questions for me a few weeks ago. You were very helpful to me and I really appreciate your advice. I don't know if this will make you feel any better but you were very inspirational. I have decided to enter the Army Nurse Corps as well. I took my physical Tuesday and my recruiter says he got the message back that I am eligible for commision, now we are just waiting for my NCLEX to send in my application. Thanks again for your inspiration. I will happily send $20 if you need it.
Thank you and I agree it will definately get better. I am just at that "hump" stage, like all students. :)IU95, thank you too, I know things are really good, in perspective...just got to wait.
Hopefully the Army will either allow me to change my ship and not mind that I won't be testing for NCLEX anytime soon.
This just feels like the longest degree coming...

Gen, I will keep posting this until you notice!
Thoughts on Stafford Loans, or other financial assistance?

Good for you. :)
I realize that my situation just needs to wait and while it will not be a smooth transition that, it will probably all be okay.
My application process was a little bumpy, (due in part to the combination of my route being unique and my recruiter being so very new to AMEDD). My commission was a little rushed and there were things I wanted changed in mycontract before signing...
I am sure it will all work out.
Like you, my eyes are on the prize now, and I need to keep focus on graduating and passing NCLEX-RN.
Everything else are just details that I can't stress over now.
Thank you also for your kind words.
I am grateful for you guys in this military forum. It really is a long application process and well, six years active duty is a big committment to have it START out with *issues* in need of correcting.
Okay, back to my serious homework for this week!
Congratultions again I look forward to reading when you get the good news on commissioning!!
Where do I send my $20 Gen?
Oh,
YOu GUYS,
Are too kind, I cannot accept a nickel though, thank you but, I cannot.
For what its worth, I realize that it may not be clear about my loans, (thanks for the private email to you know who...)
I am living off of my loans one hundred percent right now.
I have the max allowable for grad school tuition, which is about 37K for two years. However, my program costs 40.2K for tuition alone, excluding cost of living and everything that goes with it, (rent, food, paper, supplies, books and so on).
It is because of my alternative loans that I can afford my rent, I am taking the maximum amount that the school will authorize, yet, the Nursing department has the hours so high that the maximum amount the school will allow us to borrow, (as it does for all grad students) does not TRULY cover our cost of attendance.
Yeah, DePaul is a very expensive program. The neighborhood is also a very expensive neighborhood to live in too and rent is about 1k a month for me. So, my alternative loans had to cover the tuition not covered in federally allowed loans as well as cover two years worth of rent.
I am sure I could go and take another signature loan but, I am maxed out on what DePaul Financial Aid office will approve to a lender for me.
This is why I have to get to work. My interview went well this morning, I meet the manager soon.
Like everyone else, I will just make do with minimal sleep too.
It will work out, my venting is venting and I could not accept any help, really, I'm loaned out and would rather work for six months to afford it first.
:)

You are strong, intelligent, and honorable. You will make a great Army officer when you finally get there. Good luck.

Can't understand why a $500.00 loan to cover NCLEX exam, etc. would not be more beneficial in the long run. This way you could work prn as an RN and make more $$$ than as a tech.
Only you know what is the best plan. I do wish all the best & hope you get a "GO" for the ANC. I can see you would make an outstanding ANC officer.
Gen,
I'm sure you are done with loans, but there ARE loans that don't have to go through the school. Since I am going to a community college, the most I could get approved for was link $2k/year. Can anyone live on that? But, I was able to get a private loan through Wells Fargo that had nothing to do with my school. The check was sent directly to me. IIRC, you can request up to 25k/year. I know there are other places that offer these types of things.
Just something else to think about
