Bullying in Nursing? Did I make the right decision?

Published

Hello everyone,

I am starting to think that I may have made the wrong decision. I am a 35 yo. career changer and will be entering nursing school next fall. From what I have read about "nurses eating their young" I think I have made the wrong decision. I hate to give up after I've put all this time, effort and $$ into school, but I also don't want to be harassed and belittled everyday.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I really dont think you should let that scare you away from starting a new career in nursing. I am just finishing up my first semester in nursing school. If you really feel a calling and feel that nursing is for you GO FOR IT!!! Not every hospital is staffed with "eat their young" nurses. The facilities that we have had rotation in welcome us and guide us along our paths... some more strict than others, but I think they just want us to work to our full potential and may expect more of us that we think we are capable of...and when you accomplish something you thought was beyond you, it is such a great reward internally.

Also consider you will be the "new fish". Of course you will be tested and they may feel threatened because of your newness, but prove yourself, do your very best, and don't let others dictate your life for you. You are your own worst critic, and as long as you are working according to policy let them talk. You will eventually find your place in the "pack".

Good luck in the future... follow your heart!

Zazoo, Thanks. This really helped.

Hi! I'm the one who started the "eat their young" thread...sorry! I'm not trying to scare anyone away!

My suggestion: work somewhere as a nurse extern or CNA and get a good feel for whether or not it's a good fit while you're still in school. My problem is that I had a full ride plus stipend, and did not NEED to work. I worked briefly as a tech, but quit when the going got tough in school and did not force myself to find another job that I might have liked more. I did work as a CNA prior to nursing school, but then moved out of state to go to school.

Another suggestion...if you experience a clinical rotation in a place you like, go for that! Talk to the manager before your rotation is over and make your interest known. Please don't be scared away by situations like mine! I'm not leaving nursing and you shouldn't either!! YOu and I both will find our niche!

You might have a day when it feels like that but if you really enjoy nursing the good will out weigh the bad. Not every day in nursing is bad.

this is a place to come to and vent with other nurses who know what you are talking about it's not ment to scare incoming nurses off. Husbands can list but can't really relate or give advice.,

If this is whats in your heart then GO FOR IT
