BSN student hoping to go into nursing midwifery

Hi!

I am a BSN student with the goal of attending a nursing midwife program someday. Does anybody have any advice for me now, as an undergraduate student, to set myself apart for these programs? Should I be shadowing ARNP's in this field and documenting hours? Are there any undergraduate certifications I can get? Does anybody in this field have any advice for an undergrad student with goals like this? I am so passionate about this field and so excited to hopefully someday be apart of it.

Try to get a job in OB/L&D once you are an RN

I agree with Klone. Your focus now should be on your BSN studies (to have a high GPA to be competitive for grad school) -- and doing what you can to get a job in L&D after graduation. Try to get your foot in the door now by either volunteering in an OB setting or getting a part-time job in one as a student. Focus your school projects on L&D / OB when you can. Do exceptionally well in those courses in school. If your school has a senior capstone experience, be sure to do it there, etc. Do whatever you can to get a job there after graduation.

Then after graduation, focus on becoming an excellent OB/L&D nurse. Then you will be ready for grad school when it is time for that.

Totally agree about working in l&d first. Grad school will be most impressed by your GPA and your experience more so than you shadowing anyone during undergrad. Besides. I thought I would love labor and wanted to be a CNM. But honestly now having been in it for a while- I don't love it and can't imagine doing it for a long time. Remember CNM are on call and may be awake working for 24 hours while still being responsible for 2 lives (one you can't "see") try it before you buy it!
