Im in school to become an Rn. Im in the bsn program. I do not have any hospital experience or anything. Im 20 years old took 2 years of pre-reqs and now Im starting the nursing courses. Is there a certain amount of time in nursing school where I can actually work as an lpn in a hospital while I go to school to become an rn? Or do you need to go to school to be an LPN? because Ive heard both. Ive heard after some nursing courses and clinicals you can sit for a test?:heartbeat

THanks for you help everyone!

You will take classes to become an RN. After graduating you will take the NCLEX exam in your state. If you pass the test you will get an RN license in your state. There is no such thing as working as an LPN first. An LPN is another type of licensed nurse. LPNs take a nursing course in LPN schools and when they graduate they take the NCLEX-PN exam. If they pass it they get an LPN license. There is no equivalency between RN school and an LPN license. Some states allow RNs who have dropped out of nursing school at a certain point to take the NCLEX-PN exam but there is a lot of paper work to do it and the LPN license they get is only good in the state in which they live and usually cannot be transferred to other states. A handful of RN schools have a special thing where they have the RNs in their program take and get an RN license along the way to getting their BSNs. That is something specific to their program and spelled out in their nursing program information.

Do not let your age intimidate you. Stay in your BSN program. Take the courses that you are supposed to in the sequence listed. You will get clinical experience as part of the nursing curriculum. That is required by the state board of nursing. I was 24 when I started nursing school, but there were several people who were your age in my class. Even after we graduated it took several years of working as licensed RNs to gain experience. That is true of all nurses including LPNs. Getting an LPN first and working to get experience will only slow you down. The work and responsibility of an LPN is different from that done by an RN.

I'm enrolled in an ADN program. At my school we are eligible to sit for the lpn test after our first year.

Specializes in acute care.

I would advise that you check with your state board of nurses or ask an advisor at your school. NY state used to allow students to sit for the LPN boards after the first year, but they recently stopped allowing it.

Specializes in 2 years as CNA.

this question made me very curious about what is allowed here in texas. i went to the texas board of nurses site and found out that you can sit for lpn nclex if you have completed the requirements for lvn.

can i take the nclex-pn if i have completed part of my rn education?

undergraduates from adn/bsn programs must meet the curriculum and clinical requirements of graduates of vocational nursing programs. at the time the undergraduate completes these requirements, a transcript and course descriptions must be submitted to the board for determination of eligibility. instructions and the lvn examination application maybe downloaded from the forms page.

very interesting.
