Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

Yesterday was three weeks after the application due date. I would bet on Friday for some kind of admissions info. We will know for certain a week from Friday, regardless. That's not too far away. I aced the first micro exam of the semester today. I didn't know if it was possible, so I am relieved. Tough professor! I studied with a classmate and it helped a lot. I think group study is a nursing school "must." Studying ahead also certainly sounds like a "must," E_Sarita.

Nope, I have a bachelor's degree in journalism, so this is a big career change for me! I did take a 120 hour CNA course in October to kind of get my feet wet with some healthcare experience though, as I was worried about the fact that I had none, and even though a CNA and an RN are not the same job I think that the clinical experience I got in a nursing home during the course will help me feel a little more at ease working with patients in nursing clinicals than I might have felt without that experience.

I'm really hoping today or tomorrow is the day we find out! I'm praying that we all get in, I think we're a really awesome group of applicants and that we would rock this program. :)

I don't think we are supposed to name professors on this blog. I take it a north campus during the day

My friend is a charge nurse and told me that most nurses think the CNA is experience is valuable, and many who were never CNAs wish they had been. She also said that working in a hospital makes all the clinical school experiences much easier because you become familiar with the environment and the equipment, etc... I'm thinking of taking a part-time job at her hospital while I am in school. I think I will wait until after the intense first summer session. Maybe I should start now...

I think a CNA job at a hospital will be very beneficial; every little bit counts. My friend who has her BSN and is in school to get her MSN to be a nurse practitioner told me that she "wipes at least one butt every shift" at her hospital job, so it's not like as nurses we'll be immune from doing any of the tasks CNAs do. Plus, working at a hospital can give you the advantage of knowing the employers there, and you'd have more of an edge in getting an RN job there after you finish the nursing program over other new RNs. And they might even want to pay for your BSN if you're lucky! ;) My CNA instructor told me that hospitals usually train CNAs as PCTs, so you most likely will be trained in EKG and phlebotomy, but that might depend on the hospital.

I've heard that after the first semester of nursing school, students can work as CNAs (I guess we learn all those skills first semester?). I plan on working part-time or per diem as a CNA after the first semester if I feel I can juggle it with school.

I totally agree Christopher. I think our Magic 8 ball may be a little rusty and out of tune. I'm calling it, I don't think we are finding out anything until the 15th.

Sorry, I already called it :I thinking tomorrow. But, if not for sure BEFORE the 15th! I don't think any other class waited the whole time.

I am hoping you are right because I am not sure if I can take another weekend of not knowing... Time to go see a man about some joojoo! :wacky:
