Brooklyn and Manhattan VA

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi,

I'm looking on some information on the Manhattan and Brooklyn VAs and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for on their website. By any chance does any one know if either of these hospitals have a women's clinic or L&D? Just curious, I am in nursing school in Chicago and doing some of my clinical at Chicago's VA, their women's clinic is small, and relegated to the basement. I'd like to work for the VA in New York when I graduate, but I'd also like to eventually go into L&D and I don't know if I can do that at the VA.

HI sorry I am responding so late to your request. I no longer live in NYC, but I did work at VISN3 (Brooklyn VA)

No, there are no L&D units at the MVA or the BVA. I can speak for the Brooklyn VA (BVA) and their womens clinic is tiny. I think it is staffed by a NP anyway.

The Brooklyn VA has free parking, whereas the Manhattan VA doesn't. In fact, I would tell you it would be near impossible to bring your car into the city, especially during the day shift, and think you would be able to find street parking. There are places, public parking places, but they charge two arms and three legs! Mayor Blomberg has been tossing around the idea of charging automobiles a toll to enter the city via the Brooklyn or Queensboro bridges. Outrageous, to say the least!

There is a need for critical care nurses at both places, but then with the economy the way it is, I saw on another thread that the VA is considering a hiring freeze...Sad.....

I would definitely advocate for anyone to work at the VA (if they are hiring). Salary is GREAT and you will find that many of the nurses have been working at the VA for 15, 20 years.

Thank you for thinking about caring for our Nation's Veterans!

If you have any questions I would be most happy to try to answer them or direct you to the proper place for info.

Tolls on those bridges? Yikes. I wonder where they would put the toll booths- it will certainly affect traffic, especially if on both ends. I don't think I've ever been on the Queensboro bridge, but I used to take the BK bridge often since you could drive straight onto the FDR from it.

Good luck if you decide to apply Gingersnap. Let us know how the work atmosphere at the MVA is if you get hired.

I think they would hook up some of those E-Z Pass readers instead of actual toll booths, at least, that is what I would do.

When I lived in Queens I used to ride my bicycle over the 59th Street Bridge/Queensboro Bridge and head downtown to a tiny hospital called St. Clare's on W51st street. Then, when I changed hospitals and worked at Memorial Sloan-Kettering I would ride my bicycle uptown to E68th. Either way I was riding about 20 miles round trip. When I worked nights during the summer sometimes I would walk from Jackson Heights to Upper East side and home again. One day it took me only 45 minutes! But I was much younger then, ha ha... I also, only once, rode my bicycle over 59th Street bridge downtown to Chambers Street, rode over the Brooklyn bridge then all the way up to Bay Ridge then back to Queens. Ah, memories!

Wow Athena! Those are some serious trips- I'm impressed. I'm scared to ride a bicycle here in Slowsville NC lol. I can't imagine doing it up there with all that hustle & bustle. If I am lucky enough to work in NYC one day I'll be on the subway or the command bus as least with the 'cushiony' seats.

Walking in the city during the summertime is a great feeling, I actually like walking around in the nighttime more than in the day.
