Brookhaven Nursing Program

Published

Hi there!

I am applying to Brookhaven's (Texas) nursing program for Fall 2015 and am wondering if there are any current or past students that can give me some insight about what the schedule is like once admitted to the program. I am wondering about class and clinical schedules, is it a 5 day/week class load, or are there classes only on certain days? Are clinicals any day of the week? How many days? Do/did any of you work during school?

I am 31 and know I will have to quit my full time day job, but in preparation, I am trying to brainstorm about other job opportunities during nursing school to help supplement my income, and who better to ask than people who are currently or who have already lived it?! I want to be sure I am as prepared as possible for the time commitments that nursing school will require of me.

Thank you for any advice!

Erica

Do not work or make plans for any thing else b/c you will need your time to study.

In response to the post above, I really don't understand why people think or give people the impression that every other thing in one's life cease to exist just because you are in a nursing program. I know many nursing students who are currently working and doing good in school. It is absolutely possible and it all depends on the individual especially when u really need to work for financial reason.

@ OP...... it will depend on you and how you handle work, school and creating time to study. Also, do not completely cut off your loved ones just because you are in a nursing school. Attending family get together or going to the movies once in a while will not hurt. What I am saying is that at the end of the day, your making it or failing it will depend on you, your time management, study habit, and comprehension of the material that you are studying.

I will be starting the program on the 20th, we don't have a schedule yet (will probably be out next week), currently work full time with a flexible schedule and I intend to work but maybe cut down on my hours because there is no way I can afford not to work (some of us are not that lucky), oh and did I add that I have two years old twin babies?? I just love my life....

I will be back when I get the class schedule.

Hi Mamatwinx, thank you for your reply! I also cannot afford not to work, I am my sole provider and always have been. Unfortunately my job does not offer flexible hours, so I am thinking I will have to find something completely different, which is scary because this is the only field I have ever worked in.. I am hoping I will be able to be a patient care tech at a hospital or something of the sort to start getting a little experience. Congrats on acceptance to your nursing program! Are you attending Brookhaven??

Yes, I am and i,m also a patient tech. Like I said, you can work while in school but you will have to manage your time diligently and study very well because you really need to protect your place in that program considering how hard you fought to get there in the first place.

You are right! I have been working so hard! Sorry to pick your brain so much, but do you have to have special training or certs for applying for a patient care tech position? I think that's what I am leaning toward. Also, if you think of it, please let me know what the schedule for the program ends up being, I would GREATLY appreciate some insight! Good luck to you! I am so excited for you because I can only imagine how exciting it is to be starting nursing school!

Mamatwin, I will be completing my CNA certifications in a few weeks and hoping to find a job as a PCT in the DFW area. Could you give any tips?

eelittle....sorry I'm getting back here so late....been very busy with life. To answer your questions, our class schedule is finally out. It's a Monday - Wednesday class with open lab on Thursdays. Clinical is once a week. To your 2nd question, personally, I do not have any special training other than my CNA certificate and having the work experience. ...but from working in nursing homes. Honestly, I applied to several hospitals before getting this break because they were all looking for previous hospital experience which I didn't have but I was lucky enough that one of my classmates in my Microbiology class told me of an opening in that hospital....and that was how I got the job.

Mosmom,.....to be honest with you, it will be very hard to get a PCT job in an hospital considering that u don't have any previous experience especially hospital related. I would advice that you start with nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, or home health etc. It is easier to find jobs there than hospitals and you can go from there.

I hope these help some and good luck to both of u.

AH, thanks for the info! That doesn't bode well for me.. I can't imagine taking more classes right now to get my CNA certification. Hopefully I will still be able to find a flexible job that will work around my nursing school schedule! I hope things are going well for you in the program and that you are settling in.. I bet it's so exciting!

Mamatwinx, sorry for the multiple posts/questions- you are the only resource I can seem to find on here! When you turned in your application, did you include a cover letter or anything of the sort? Or, did you just hand them the required materials in a loose leafed fashion? I just found out that I aced my dosage calc exam so I am ready to submit my app but cant seem to find any info on the presentation of the app- only the required materials.

Thanks again for your wisdom:)

Hi! I am going to submit my app too, I was put on the alternate list sadly, no spot had opened for me so I am applying again!

I believe there is no cover letter needed, just make sure you have everything in the packet, and your course substitution done soon if u have one.

How many points will you have when you apply? Are you considering to apply to other school as well?
