Hi,
I'm a final year student of mental health Nursing and i'm wanting to find out as much information about the process of how to become a mental health nurse in New York.
So far i understand that you need to complete a CGFNS application to see what requirements i need as american nurses are general trained and UK nurses are specialised trained. Therefore i will need to top up my practical and theory hours in each field of nursing.
Does anybody know how or where i can do a top up course in the UK?
Has anybody done this process before? Is anybody a british nurse working in New York?
I understand the visa application is lengthy can anybody shed any light on the process?
what about the process of actually getting a job in New York/America in the mental health field? is it difficult? do you have to join an agency? what are the interviews like? or are they similar to the UK?
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated as i have little knowledge!!
Thanks x

Moving to Nurse Registration since a majority of your issues have to do with immigration and getting licensed in the US.
Best of luck.

Currently no where in the UK to top up. Currently there is retrogression and has been since Oct 2006 so expect anything from 2-10 years wait. The wait goes up and down depending on demand. Jobs in NYC for many US nurses so expect a long haul to finding a US employer willing to go through the process once you have met state requirements and passed NCLEX
