Breaking into Dialysis

Published

Hi All

I'm an Asn. RN living in South Florida, and will complete my BSN this month. I have 14 months acute rehab experience. I am interested in chronic dialysis and have submitted numerous applications, but no luck. I often hear that dialysis needs nurses, but find it concerning that I've gotten no replies even after 3 months of seeking.

Could it be the my location (competitive) or experience (length & type) that is making me an unfavorable candidate?

What other options (eg. Walk-in and give my resume to the nurse manager) may I pursue to increase my chances? Thanks.

I'm in Texas but a friend of mine just happened to call a Fresenius clinic and the person who picked up the phone told her that they were hiring. I don't know why she chose that particular clinic but it's one that's always short staffed.

Just by luck she got hired. She has her BSN.

Thanks TEXASWAG. Next week when I complete my BSN, I'll try that along with dropping off my resume in person. Does any hospital system have their own dialysis outpatient clinic, or do they all contract out their dialysis? Thanks.

No, here in Texas it depends on the city. Fresenius lost a bunch of contracts in San Antonio but in Austin they are thriving. To see if a hospital has its own dialysis unit check their careers page for inpatient dialysis positions.

But if you’re just interested in outpatient chronic then the only companies I’m familiar with are Davita, Fresenius, and US Renal. In general they do outpatient dialysis and hospitals do inpatient. Some hospitals do contract out to Fresenius, davita or Satellite for inpatient dialysis.

I worked for Fresenius and DaVita both, but now work for an academic institution; both companies have job websites, which sounds like you know already. They both also have hiring events, but those tend to be in areas where there are many clinics. I don't see a problem with going in to the various clinics and introducing yourself. They will probably refer you to the job website, but it can't hurt. Just keep applying. Someone will call you, usually a recruiter. It sounds like you have the right credentials.

Good luck!

I will refer you! Send me an email

I worked for both DaVita and Satellite and both hire new grad nurses and train them. I now work for a hospital-based unit which does not contract out its dialysis. It was much harder to get in to the hospital, even with experience.

I agree with what many posters mentioned above. Many units are short and you may have a better chance of walking in and introducing yourself. Once they meet you and like you they may be more willing to hire and train you.

Thanks for the information and encouragement. I will keep trying.

HDNurse88, thank you!!! However, I am not able to message you at this time ?, which could be because I am a new member and have not made a certain number of post, per Allnurses' policy. I'll check the specifics, and message you as soon as I'm eligible.

In my area, there are no shortage of nurses or nurses with education. It took me years of trying to finally get on. I think some areas are more saturated with nurses so people tend to hold on to jobs longer. Good luck, I love dialysis
