Doing some practice tests here and one of the answers says that "giving report to the oncoming nurse at the pts bedside would be a breach of confidentiality". Can anyone tell me why a pt hearing THEIR OWN INFORMATION is a breach of confidentiality? I don't get it.

Assuming the room is a semi-private, doing bedside report with just a curtain to separate the rooms could lead to PHI being overheard by someone that really shouldn't hear it.
Of course i considered this part, thats obvious...just trying to figure out if thats what they were referring to or something else.

yeah i agree...gotta think about if the patient has a roommate, and of course, the door is usually opened to a busy hallway.
also, it is not appropriate to discuss a patient's status in front of that patient as if he/she is not there. if two nurses are standing at the bedside discussing a patient while the patient is laying in bed listening this appears rude and disrespect. if the patient, however, is involved in the conversation, then i think it would be okay as long as the room is private and the door remains shut

Could also be people hearing in the hallway if door is open. They do this at my hospital though and personally I hate it. One I hate doing it in front of patient, I mean really, what if I want to say this patient has been a pain in the orifice, but really it just feels off to me to talk about someone right there to another person.

does it specifically say report on just that patient? im assuming they mean shift change report (because they say to the oncoming nurse), which would include updates on ALL patients in that nurses care, which would be inappropriate to disclose at a patients bedside.
just my 2 cents..
