Boss unhappy they hired a new grad

My boss told me they never hire new grads on my unit and that I better step it up or else. I'm working as hard as I can but it is impossible to know everything after only being on my uint 20 some days. From what I knew when I started to what I can do is astounding to me. My orientation is a year program so I feel that she is being extremely unrealistic and just wants me gone. I am terrified I will be let go. Now one of the people that hired me came and gave me "the talk." Please help!

Ask your boss what the expectations are then work on a progress plan from there. Also, what dept are you working?

Honestly, an experienced nurse with no OR experience isn't much different than a new grad. Join us in the OR forum- I have an article with tips for new OR nurses and there's some other good threads there.

Wow, your boss is a jerk.

You are a new grad. It is going to take you longer to learn than an experienced nurse. She normally doesn't hire new grads because of this. However, she hired you, a new grad. Why she is making this your fault is beyond me, she's acting like you hired yourself.

Keep showing up and trying your best. If you sense she might fire you, put in your two weeks. Once you have enough experience, leave.

You're not alone. I've gone through a very similar experience recently.

I wasn't able to make it, as mine was only a 12-14 week orientation. You have a year, so hopefully you can come back and salvage it. Although my manager seemed supportive, at least in the beginning, I definitely had coworkers that wanted me gone. They got their wish.

I can't offer any advice, because I was unsuccessful myself. I can only send you hugs, because I know how it feels.

I agree with RNinIN. She obviously has an expectation of where she wants you to be in your training, but isn't wording it properly. If she never hires new grads, then she really doesn't understand where you should be in training vs her other hires. It's unfair to hire you, then be upset with you if she hasn't established goals with you.

Ask to sit down with her, tell her you are doing your best and feel that you have grown immensely... Then you ask for a detailed, individualized plan of your training. Tell her you would be happy to meet with her to discuss your progress as you continue the program. Show her that you meet her expectations and try to exceed in some areas. It's more than okay to need extra help in certain areas, and she should allow extra attention in those areas. Show her how hard you work, and if it still doesn't seem good enough, if she won't work with you, that's when you decide if they deserve your time. You both are putting valuable time, resources and energy into this program, it's only fair that you both receive what you put into it. :) Good luck!
