What would cause blood in urine? Urine appears clear and yellow, but urine dipstrips are positive for blood (urine is not very concentrated either). No back pain or any other symptoms to suggest kidney stones. Other causes?

In females, menstruation is an obvious one. Low key urine infections also do the same.
I'm being treated for SLE and my consultant was worried about blood in my urine with no other symptoms, not sure why, I'll ask her when I see her again, probably kidney related.

Urinary tract infection?
I had one a few weeks ago. I didn't see any blood, but my doctor said there was blood in my urine.

Could be a lot of reasons for microhematuria. Sometimes the bladder lining gets a little irritated from caffiene or alcohol or not drinking enough water. (Although you did say that the urine didn't look concentrated, in this case.) Sometimes we have people come in who have had radiation therapy for forms of cancer, and one of the side effects is 'radiation cystitis', the bladder lining is changed from the radiation. Those people almost always test positive for blood in the urine. Bladder lining being irritated from infection might be another cause. Still other people might have a little bladder lining tumor that is bleeding from time to time. I work for a urologist. I think that most likely, for a patient who came into the office for persistant microhematuria, he'd do a cystoscopy to look for any tumors or stones or stitches from past surgeries that could be the cause of it. If that was negative he might order a renal ultrasound just to make sure that there isn't anything going on in the kidneys. I'm told that somewhere between 80-85% percent of microhematuria is pretty much causeless, not a big deal. Is this your urine or a patient's? If it's you, I'd drink plenty of water over the next couple days and retest the urine again, see if it's still there.

Strep throat that went untreated can do that, indicating trouble with the kidneys r/t the strep. Sometimes its just idiopathic, depending on the amount. A trace is less worrisome than say 50 or 100. You want to think of external causes of irritation as well, that could be tossing out a few red cells. How about leukocytes? Nitrates? STD's (I forget if its chlamydia or gonorrhea) will show + for nitrates, and/or leuks, and you can see some blood as well on the dipstick indicator.
**Note, Im not a doctor, not quite a nurse yet either! But we've run into this with a few patients where I work.
Are you the pt? I notice you are expecting soon; if its you, call the doc and be sure everything is alright. :)

You can not normally see blood in the urine unless you spin it down and put it under a microscope. I have seen it bad enough in a male with a penile infection that the urine was reddish and S-T-U-N-K. Didn't help that he was diabetic either. Blood in the urine could mean a kidney infection. Is the person menstruating?
