Bleed Time

Depending on who you ask about how long should a patient hold his sites, we get obscure answers even from our dialysis pros. Considering that there are no issues with their access and getting adequate heparinization.

-how long should a patient hold needle sites after pulling decannulation?

-how long should they keep the dressing on?

Extra points on :

-citing an article or study supporting length of hold time

-if they're on any meds that can affect bleed time (Plavix, Eliquis, aspirin, etc.) and not on maintenance intradialytic heparinization

    Great care is needed when removing the needles.  Since the bevel is razor sharp, even slight side movements can cut the access and therefore greatly increase the bleeding time.
