Biology 153 at UBC

Hello!

I'm a student in first year Arts at UBC.

I'm desperately wanting to become a nursing student at UBC within a couple of years...

I'm currently taking Biology 153 (winter session) and is feeling very overwhelmed.

I failed my first mid-term and is wondering whether I should take it during the summer.

I'm doing fairly decent with the lab component, whereas, the lecture component is terrible.

----- has told me that he'll omit my first midterm IF I do great with the remaining exams...

but I still feel hopeless. I always feel 'blank' when I go into lectures and feel like I'm wasting my time.

I really need this course to get admitted to UBC nursing, but it's currently influencing my other courses in a negative way as well.

I'm still adapting to university life...

So I'm thinking whether it'll be better to take it during the summer (then I will be able to commit my whole time just into Biology).

I hope to hear from you guys asap with some great advice!!!

Thanks!

Hi jsjkim,

I'll be honest: nursing school is tough. I remember being a student only a few short years ago and busting my bottom to get through Bio, Orgo, Chem, Stat, Nursing... I had a lot of challenges and moments when I thought I couldn't go on. You need to evaluate

1. Why you want to be a nurse

2. If you are doing everything in your power to pass these classes

I would suggest getting a tutor and seeing how your grades are affected from there. If you need to take the class again and are financially able to do so, I would do it. Nursing is incredibly rewarding and worth the challenges. Best of luck!

Hey preppyrn, thanks for your comment...

Whats Orgo..? and are chem, stat courses some of the courses you take during nursing school?

I would also say getting a tutor or a study buddy from the class to work together.

Also, have you been tested for a learning disability? My sister did great at school until college and went through testing and received help. The people at the center taught her ways to take notes and outline that better fit her and she really did great after that.

Hey Jsjkim,

I think you need to take a step back and analyze what is going on exactly, How many credits are you taking? Is the class load too much? Are you not transitioning to college well? These could all be contributing factors to your situation. If you are truly worried discuss the possibility of a withdrawal from your biology class to save your grade point average, and try again when the course is offered.

Sometimes things in life do not always go as planned and that's okay. You just have to find a different way.

The course is tough, but from what I hear, many courses are along the same lines and taught a a similar level as Bio 153 in the UBC nursing program.

I highly recommend finding a study buddy or study group as well so you can study with others and they can explain to you what you don't understand.

You can take it in the summer, but I'm not sure how much help it will be considering that UBC doesn't replace the grade of the first Bio 153 that you took. The course will just end up with 2 grades, and you get it twice on your transcript.

Are you taking notes in lecture? What do you mean by feeling blank? Even if you don't understand it, write it down so you can check in the textbook later or bring it to tutorial sessions and ask for help or ask to explain the concepts again.
