Biology 12 - notes help

You're correct. There's no 'y' in ketosis.

Hi Everyone,

I'm so glad this site is here. I am taking biology, chemistry and english before i can go on the waitlist for nursing.

I have a simple biology question. We're learning about the digestive system and in my notes under liver i have "If blood glucose levels are too low and there isn't any glycogen, the liver will break down protein and convert it to glucose. This is called keytosis." My question is well first of all keytosis, i belive is ketosis unless this is different and does hte rest sound right? sometimes my notes are hard to understand when i have to write so quick. lol

You may also invest in a good medical dictionary....it will help with definitions that may not necessarily be mentioned in your textbook. I purchased "Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing & Health Professions"

Our A&P 1 teacher recommended it to us. It's an EXCELLENT resource with great pictures, too.

Ketosis is the abnormal accumulation of ketones in the body as a result of excessive breakdown of fats caused by a deficiency or inadequate use of carbohydrates. You see this condition in starvation if the intake of protein and carbohydrates is inadequate. Also in diabetes mellitus and it may occur occasionally during pregnancy.

A good indicator is ketone breath (acetone breath) in the patient.

Isn't ketosis just the presence of ketones in the body?--Which would come from ketogenesis--excess acetyl groups (from lypolysis--fat breakdown) that are metabolized by the liver forming ketone bodies

Proteins would be broken down into amino acids which may be used for gluconeogenesis (production of glucose from non-carbs)

You are right, first we use glucose and glycogen for energy, secondly if we run out of that the body starts utilizing stored fats and if we run out of that the next thing our body does is is "eat" its own muscle tissue to produce ATP. Pretty clever mechanism, that's why we can live without food for a while
