I am currently going into my senior year majoring in Biology. I will have to take summer classes in order to graduate on time but if I do this then I will have my BS in Biology by the end of summer 2013. My dilemma is that I now want to go into nursing because I don't know what I would do with a bio degree. The only problem is, I feel like I am wasting the time and money spent on my bio degree if i dont finish it because I am only 30 credits away from it.
My two options are this: 1) finish out the bio degree (will receive at end of summer 2013) and THEN apply to accelerated programs (in Indiana, thats where I live), or 2) switch my major to nursing now (which would mean staying at my current university for good), finish my prereqs over the next year, apply to nursing school for fall 2013 admission, and then do 3 years of nursing school.
Both plans end with me getting a BSN but I can't decide which one will be better for me! Do I finish out my degree? Or should I just switch now and not look back?
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated as I have been going back and forth for over a year now and I HAVE to register for classes now because they start next week. Thanks for the help!
If nursing is what you want to do, then go for it. Remember with a Bio degree you can teach or do research, you can get a job with that degree faster, and I mean faster than a nurse position. You can get a job before you graduate. As somone above mentioned, about financial aid once you have a Bachelors, that's very true. ( get the credits close to finishing) If I was in your position this is what I would do, apply to the nursing program work on your prerequisites and in the mean while try to get close to finishing up credits for the Bio, you can always fall back on that, if things does not work out. And if you want to go back to the Bio, then you do not have many credits to finish. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm in a similar situation. I am pretty much done with my Bachelor's in psychology. Instead of switching majors and basically losing everything I've been working on for the past few years, I just decided to double major.
It works out well for me. The only classes I have left to finish my Bachelor's in psych is my 2 year foreign language requirement. In the time it'll take me to finish my language, I'll have my nursing degree. In May 2014, I'll graduate with a BA in psych, a certificate in women & gender studies, and my ADN.
By double majoring like that, I am able to maintain my financial aid status and still graduate on time. (Well, as on time as I could have been.) Also, with a Bachelor's and ADN/RN, I can apply straight to a Master's program instead of wasting time and money on getting my BSN too. There's a great program about an hour away that let's you complete your MSN online, and they don't require a BSN to get in. Win-win all around for me.
And if it is fear that's keeping you in college, like the poster above me mentioned, you're not alone. I've been in college since 2004. I'm terrified of graduating, but honestly, at this point, I'm so ready to finally have a degree to show for all the time and money I've spent on campus. It's still scary to think about getting a Big Girl Grown Up job, but I've gotten so sick of working retail. I can't wait till 2014 when I can start a new chapter of my life!
