Bigotry/Racism in SNF's

Published

OKAY---here's the problem. We have a lot of demented residents, as do you all, I'm sure. Many of them hate black people, Haitians, Portugese people...they are always saying things like "she hurt me...you know those kind stick together"...or, "she's mean to me, you know how blacks are". Do you have these problems? and do you investigate every allegation?I know I need to protect my residents, but I also need to protect my staff from crazy allegations based on color. On my 11-7 shift, there is only one white CNA in the building so it would be impossible for me to assign someone else to these bigots....

Specializes in Nursing assistant.

OK, I would get this all the time :You are so much nicer than those other girls. You take such better care of me than those other girls! You work harder than those other girls!

Now, being white, and having the trust of these pts, I felt I would be wrong NOT to explain to my notdementedpatients that : Those other "girls" work rings around me, and they care about you as much as I do. That, all I know I learned from "those other girls"....

I have had patients come back to me and say, yes, you are right, that nursing assistant is really very nice.....I quess I just needed to get to know her better....

First of all, I love the "small" convalescent hospital I work in. We get an occasional drama here and there, but we generally get along and my residents are the nicest patients you would ever want to take care of (they're just too demented to be racist anyway).

The worst racism experience I've ever come across were from the big Convy/SNF type facilities from both the patients and staff....crazy. I'm glad I quit...err ran away from those stupid hospitals.
