BEWARE: Pace University

U.S.A. New York

Published

I am currently enrolled in the Pace University RN4 program. I have to say this is not a good school. The professors often avoid answering questions, do not give you any room to learn, and overall feels like they don't care whether you pass or fail.

Let me give you some examples of what I am talking about.

1. This was the first semester so we are learning patient assessment skills and everything. This girl in my class passes all but one skill, something simple in the frequency hearing test where she said "tell me when you stop feeling this" rather than "tell me when you stop HEARING this". OK, no problem she gets another chance to retake the practical. She corrects the problem and fails again. The instructor said she did another part of the exam wrong when she did everything exactly as she did the first time with the once correction that was brought to her attention. This girl tried everything but none of the professors would do anything about it and she was not allowed to move on.

2. I often have have questions that I think of when I am home studying or something and if I can't figure it out I will email a professor. I have only had 1 professor who has actually answered my questions via email. Every other professor either did not respond or told me to speak with someone else. THis really annoyed me when an email was sent about applying for a nursing internship and I asked a simple question about the internship (Whether one year of Nursing school was required when applying or the year was needed to be completed before the start of the internship, as it starts in the summer it is a reasonable question). I wrote to the woman who sent the email and she told me to contact someone else.

3. I just got an email today, less than 2 weeks before the start of Spring semester saying "All friday clinicals have been canceled. Sorry for the inconvenience." WHat the hell is that? No explanation at all, no comments on saying they will accomodate us. Simply "Sorry for the inconvenience". I don't know about anyone else, but I schedule my school around my other priorities, in this case work. I was glad there was a Friday section because the other sections interfere with my work schedule. Now they expect me to change everything at the last minute with no explanation or anything.

I have found out so far that at least 20 people have failed out during this first semester, which is probably like 15% of those enrolled. Thankfully I grasp information easily so I was able to make it on my own, but anyone who needs some extra help or needs an instructor to learn well will most likely not fit into this environment. I suggest anyone looking at Pace University seriously reconsider.

I am aware nursing school is not easy. I am a registerred Dental Hygienist and if you thnk nursing is difficult try getting into hygiene. I had to do all the pre requistes nurses had plus pathology with lab, histology , dental anatomy, advanced chemistry organic and inorganic and learn a new skill. I needed to have a good mind and good hands. The licensed exam covers eveything tht the nurses need to know plus dental anatomy dental histology, and dental pathology. etc. I want to become a nurse bcause I cannot practice hygiene due to a disability. My goal is to become CRNA. I refuse to be age discriminated and I will try my best to overcome the discriminating admissions committees which I am up against. They think they are going to wear me down bt I a strong and determined. I think it is a poor excuse to tell an applicant with good grades, excellent references and work experience that they were rejected because they did not have the same goals as the department. If these schools are going to be federally funded they should not discriminate againt age and disabilities. There are nurses that are parapeligic. I only have a neck and shoulder problem. Columbia should be ashamed of themself since I already hold a BS and MA from Columbia University and there are people at NYU in anesthesia still working at 89 years old and I am no where near that age yet.

what campus did you attend? I'm trying to apply to their accelrated program in Jan

Hey waz up. I attended pace this past fall. The program in new york is awful. After the first semester 35 students were dismissed. Actually, about 60-70% of the program failed. However, during finals, the school made the tests that everyone did horrible on worth less and some work that was open book, unlimited time, and the computer gave us the answers for, was worth more. This way the did not lose almost all their students. You may think this won't happen to you but you never know. I came in with a gpa of 3.8 and my gpa now is nothing near that at all. This past fall they redid the curriculum and it failed they even admitted it but they refused to do anything about it. They said i quote the dean " whats in the past is in the past and we can not go back and change it". The average of our test in some classes were a 68 or low to mid 70's and a passing is a 77. We all asked for help and the school never helped us. They said study and read the books again and again. Almost, all the students that are in the program hate it.

I advise you chose your school wisely since you may get stuck. Keep in mind that if you fail even one class, pace does not let you retake it they throw you out. They do not help you in any way and you are on your own. Only one professor wanted us to pass, the rest did not care. This one professor still did not help that much she arrange a little toturing, but it was not enough for whoever needed.

Do not waste your money. By goin to pace you may waste a lot. I suggest to even spend more and go to nyu they have a better passing rate and the students are happy.

wow that sounds like a nightmare. NUY won't accept online pre req classes thats why I was going trying to go to Pace. I wanted to do it in Westchester.

wow that school sounds like some impostures and crooks! i would report this asap

I went to Pace for my Business Mgmt undergrad and thought the school was great but I guess the nursing school is not on the same level as Lubin

Honestly, I do not know anything about the program in Westchester. I do know that some of the professors from the new york program (maybe all of them) teach there. You should speak to people who are in the program in westchester for the fall and the spring and see what they say. All I could say is that the one in new york is horrible. Before I went, I did not hear anything horrible regarding the program. However, since they redid the curriculum it became horrible. Those students that were in the second year of the 2 year program said that this past fall was their worst semester. The school knows that the new curriculum is not the best and there are things wrong with it. At the end of the semester the dean meet with a couple of students since she said she knows that things went wrong. Instead of helping us they got suggestion from the students' perspective regarding what to do in the future to improve the program. Maybe they do make changes and the fall semester was just an experment.

Good luck!

So good to know all this! Thank you!

They actually called me from Pace last week to see if I was still interested in attending, since I was considering taking some of my pre-reqs there. I told them that I was accepted at NYU and already started, to which they replied to let them know right away in case I changed my mind!

---------------

DO NOT GO TO PACE. As stated, in the 2 year CDP program only 6 students made it to the next semester. That is about an 80% FAIL RATE. No one, including the students who passed were happy with the program. 1 already transferred out, 2 are trying to now, and 1 is on academic probation. Not such a good record. in the 1 year CDP program I believe the failure rate was less, but still pretty substantial. And again, those who passed still are unhappy. If you have any doubts I have about 30 people who will gladly tell you not to go to Pace. These were all good students who have bachelors from excellent schools, they were not slackers (one was a doctor from India, yep, she failed out). Professors ignore emails asking for assistance, tutors that were provided actually failed out as well. BEWARE!!! RUN WHILE YOU CAN!

I can't encourage everyone enough to do more research before attending Pace. I started the CDP program with just the information that they send you. And the US News ranking pretty well sold me on its own. I had read the negative comments about Pace on allnurses before starting, but I really just thought I was better than the people who posted those comments. Shame on me, I ended up with them and failed out this past semester too.

Take the time and use things like Facebook to your advantage. Find people actually in the program to tell you about it, go visit the school, meet with the faculty, including the department chair, ask them what their graduation rates really are. Ask the faculty how many lawsuits are pending against the School of Nursing from former students. And believe me, the faculty is good about fudging their information to appeal to you, so ask detailed questions!!! They told us that they normally have a 90% graduation rate...but little did I know that they couldn't have possibly known that considering that they restructured the program, and we were their guinea pigs. Our class had an 80% fail rate from the first semester, and that poor 20% left in the program still has a year and a half to try to remain in the program.

I find it a blessing that I was kicked out of Pace. Those left in the program are trying to transfer out, and they're wasting their time and money at Pace in the meantime.

wow. thanks for the info. Have you graduated from pace yet?
