What are the Best / Worst aspects of your program?

hmmmmmmmmmmm

good thread!

I guess amoung the best aspects about my program would be :

We have a small class - started out with 30 and only 21 are left so we get individualized attention - The Instructors are very knowledgable and care - Our program has a great rep at the hospital where we do clinicals, thus the attitude toward us by the people we are working with is great for the most part! (and we can see the difference in the other groups doing clinicals there too!)

On the other end of the spectrum - not much I can honestly put here but one thing does come to mind:

There are a few who think that every moment they can find should be spent "visiting" with their neighbor, regardless of if we are supposed to be studying, reviewing on our own or whatever - Anytime the Instructor is out of the room they start immediately including during films - And even if the Instructor is in the room and just not teaching at that the moment it starts also - It doesn't matter what is said to them they will not shut up! At the most they will be quiet for maybe a minute and then it starts right up again - It has gotten to the point where I don't even bother anymore - when it starts I just get up and go outside to study (And yes if the Instructor is in the room I still do - I simply ask permission to go somewhere where it is "quieter" to study and have always been given permission!)

But what about you mitchsmom? Not fair to start a thread without sharing with us also! :D

Ok mine:

Best - I have been very happy with the quality of my instruction. My three teachers have been great and bring a lot of knowledge.

Worst - (1)the afforementioned secrecy (in another thread).

(2)I'm going 3/4 time, the full time students have one more class that I don't have and it has apparently been a complete nightmare, they are totally unhappy with the instructor and class - and I mean *everyone* feels this way - 100% . I have to take it next semester and supposedly there are going to be changes... we'll see. I venture to say that this may be a pet peave of mine in the future: our program is only a few years old and this leads to good things in that it's new and progressive and not set in its ways - but also bad things because I feel like things are still ever shifting and settling in to what works and what doesn't. Overall, I'd probably still take it because nothing makes me more crazy than doing something just because "that's the way it's always been done" - at least they are willing to change (eventually) if something doesn't work.

The cons of my program seem similar to Bedpan, in addition to the fact that they just don't have their stuff together. The computer room (which they charge $20 a semester for) was just discovered by 2 of us the other day. It's as if they're hiding it. I don't know about any other school, but I do not feel like I'm being taught. I feel like I'm being read to. They read word for word out of the textbook and add their 2 cents here and there.

The pros of my school....hmmm.....well, it used to be one of the best years ago. Looking at it now, I dunno. I guess it's not too bad, especially when I hear stories of other schools. Good thing I'm self-motivated and know what I'm there for, unlike my classmates that leave for 40 minutes when the break is only for 20 minutes, then come back with their food, sit down and eat it right in front of everybody. (Don't get me started!!)

Very good topic by the way. Everyday I come home I have something to ***** about.

Great thread! Yes, you got me started! The best of my program is the friends I have made and been in classes with for the last year. Worst: The nursing director, the OB instructor (we all hear horror stories), the closed-minded-ness of the department (not open to any type of change). The fact that I feel I am not valued as an individual as far as my grades, class participation and attendance. If you run into trouble, that fact will not help you out. And bedpan, I have the same problem with "chatters" in my class, it is very annoying, the constant drone of their conversation during lecture. Actually I cannot wait to be out of that school.
