Hello,
Currently I am a second semester nursing student in a BSN program. I have several interviews this upcoming week for a tech position at a fantastic hospital in my city. I'm interviewing with managers on the Neuroscience ICU, telemetry/pulmonary HTN floor, and a medical PCU. My long term goal is to eventually work in a cardiac or medical ICU as an RN. While I would be happy with any job offer I possibly receive- which unit do you believe would give me the largest opportunity to learn and grow as someone who eventually wants to work ICU?
Thank you for your time!

For learning, as a tech, get on the units. It will give you more time with the devices and patient population that you are going to want to take care of and also more face time with the nurses who might potentially be a reference for you. Wherever you go, work hard, make sure the nurses know that you are competent and dependable.
When I started working, I was on a CVT telemetry stepdown for 1 year and then transferred down to the Cardiac/Transplant ICU, I have been there for 4-ish years now. I will be honest with you, getting that one year of floor experience was absolutely invaluable. I would be a lesser nurse now if I had gone straight into the unit rather than getting the year on the floor. Not only that, but I can pick up OT on any floor and any unit now because of that. Try to figure out what you want, come up with a game plan, and stick with it! Good luck and let us know how it goes!
