Merry Christmas to all!

I have posted my resume on Monster and Career Builders.

I am receiving MANY responses from registries and would like to know which ones are the best for southern California?

Also if you were out for a long time which area of nursing would you need to brush up on the most?

Which area of nursing would welcome you back and which would not? I am med/surg and DO NOT want to return to that are of nursing. Any suggestions are appreciated and welcomed very much. Thanks so much for your help.

If you do not have current hospital experience, even if you find an agency that will offer you something, they are going to have issues trying to get you placed in a facility.

And even more so if you are wanting to go to another field and do not have experience in that area, not a good thing to do. As an agency nurse, you are expected to fill in when the facility is short, you do not get much of an orientation, perhaps just a day or two to learn the computer system and where things are located, but not to get trained in that area.

I would suggest a refresher program offered thru one of the community colleges if you need it, and then take a job with a facility directly so that you can get the training and experience that you need for what you are wishing to do.

Thank you Suzanne for the great advice. I am getting a lot of phone calls telling me they love my resume and want to place me in a job but I have a feeling it is med/surg which I don't want. I have taken two refresher courses in the past, but awhile ago so I probably would need to do it again. Anyway thanks again.

Whatever you do, DO NOT except any jobs from a recruiting company called........ They are horrible! They lied to this hospital they sent me to and told them I had all this experiance when I really didn't even though they knew that because I'd told them multiple times. They basically could have put my license in jepardy. It is extremely obvious that they only care about the money they can make off you. They don't care about their employees or the patients they send their employees to take care of. Stay away from them! They set you up for failure, and the recruiters that contact you for jobs are extremely rude on the phone. Also, this company never has any jobs to give out. I was hired by them in August, and they didn't have a job for me until November! Needless to say, I wouldn't want any other healthcare professional looking for work out there to go through the same humiliation and rudeness that I had to go through. You deserve better. I don't really know that much about the other registeries out there, but I just felt I should warn you about.............

Maxim offices are loacated all over Souther Ca. I have dealth with 2 and worked for one through this last flu season. I did not experience anything that you mentioned above. I did recieve a tremendous amount of calls from them when I first listed my resume on the net and when I told them I did not have the exp. they were still pleasent and told me to contact them after I had a yr of experience.

After working the flue season I wanted to do home health with them but still without having a yr of experience they would not hire me for it.

I am sorry that you had a bad experienced. But the office are individually run and the staff only works for said office. I'm sure there is a main corporate office some where that handles all of them.

This is what you are not understanding; agencies can love your resume all that they want, but they need to place you in hospitals or some type of facility and that facility is the one that determines if you will work for them or not. The agency is not the one that determines this and if they cannot place you, then you do not get paid. You are not placed on a retainer, but only get paid once you have worked for them as that is how they get paid.

It is not even a point of taking a refresher course, but the fact that you do not have any actual work experience in other areas. Not sure if you realize that you do not get orientation with agency/registry but are expected to be able to fill right in when the facility is short. You may get a day or two to learn the paperwork, or computer; but the actual skills in that area, you will be expected to already have. If a facility is short, they do not have months to train you for the area that you want as an agency nurse.

Thank you for proving what I posted above, just because an agency hires you it does not mean that you will get jobs right away. They have to send out your resume to the prospective company or individual to see if they are interested inn you completing a shift for them. If they cannot get you placed, then you do not get paid. And this goes for any company.

Suzanne I do understand what you are saying and also I understood your previous post regarding this. I am not trying to say these agencies want me I am just saying why call me off the hook if I haven't worked in years. I'm not anxious to answer any of them at this point because I want to go back to work but I still am not really sure where to start since it's been awhile and that is my dilemma really.

I am a med/surg nurse and I HAVE experience just not recent. I am not really wanting to go back to that area due to knee problems etc. but at the same tiime I don't quite know where to start. I am free to work flexible hours and I have kept up my license and taken refreshers.

So if you get me now maybe you can give some constructive advice on where to start to a RN who would like to go back to work. Thanks again!

Tracylvm thanks for your input regarding Maxim. That's the kinda info we need to have so we don't waste our time on employers. I have always been one to interview them while they interview me if you know what I mean. After all we nurses are a valuable commodity right Ha! I wish I could say I believe most employers value us but we all know they really don't or we would get the respect we deserve. All I can do is value myself and I believe anyone who becomes a nurse is a very special person.

I am REALLY wanting to go back to work but I WILL NOT return to med/surg. I want to branch into something that challenges me but not to the point to where I am setting myself up for failure. As I said before I really don't know where to start. I've already done refreshers.

I wanted to ask you what info you could share about home health and why you suggested that? Thanks again!

I suggested home health because you would be able to get back into the nursing filed. You work one on one with clients pretty much set your own hours, and you already have experience. I my self have not worked home health so I do not now all it entails but it has been recommended to me. I have to wait till I have my liscense for a yr before I can apply for any home health agency.Good luck in your journey.
