U.S.A. Massachusetts

I am a junior in high school and have just started looking into colleges with a bsn innursing. I want to go to a public university since its more affordable and logically. I was wondering which state school in MA had the best nursing program and which was best overall. Thanks.

All the state nursing programs are highly regarded, whatever one you get into will be the best one for you. The programs are very competitive best of luck.

Salem State ranks very highly on the NCLEX pass rate. I graduated from there and support the program. Excellent professors who give you what you need to know to pass the exam and a solid foundation to be a great nurse.

When I was looking to transfer my local community college advisor had mentioned that Fitchburg is considered one of the best BSN programs in the state. But I think that in Mass you can't really go wrong with any program you get into. Best of luck!

UMass Dartmouth has a good program and we have a mentorship program during the senior year in the 2nd half of spring semester. This is where you get to pick a specialty and work one on one with a nurse in the specialty you think you want to practice after graduation. We also have a sim man that is a computer simulated patient that students use to practice clinical skills.

Overall my #1 piece of advice is to go in as a nursing major because its easier to change your mind and leave nursing if that should happen then it is to transfer in to the nursing major when you start college as a non nursing major. Good luck with all of your applications alot of schools have info days comming up and are probably listed on their websites. UMass Dart has one in early spring for nursing so you might want to look into that.

I would suggest going to the state's website to see each schools success rate at passing the NCLEX. If you are going to put in the time and effort, might as well give yourself the best shot at passing the exam at the end. :) Best of luck to you!

As another poster said, you can't go wrong with any of the state school programs in Mass for nursing; they are all quite good. But, here's my experience with the schools I attended. I did my BS in another subject at Worcester State and loved going to school there. I was impressed by all of the science courses I had there and heard that their nursing program is good. It's a relatively small school, which I liked, and you get to know the people in your major as well as your professors.

I went to Salem State for nursing and loved it. My program was the DEP (for people who already have a Bachelors degree), so not what you're interested in, but a few professors overlap as do the facilities. We had access to a great nursing lab, had great clinical placements and fantastic professors. Also, my programs NCLEX pass rate is 100% - you can't beat that! I recommend either school highly, but you'll have to go check them out yourself to see what feels right to you.

UMASS Amherst has a great reputation....Pretty hard to get in but well worth it seeing that about 3,000 apply and only about 60 get in. Goodluck

The place to check pass rate for nursing schools in the state is the HHS website for the state. Look here: http://tinyurl.com/yk66oz6. Quite a few schools had 100% pass rate in 2008. The 2009 numbers should be out soon. Go for the BSN.

Dear SalamandaRN,

What was your your Major at Worcester state? My daughter is planning to go to WSU and wants to graduate from there. Then go to Salem State for their RN program as she did not get into WSU's nursing major. How many month's (full time/ partime) is Salem's DEP program?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thank you
