Best place for RN graduate?

Published

Hello, I am a nursing student in my last semester of an ADN program. I have been a CST for 7 years and I will be taking a job in the OR as an OR nurse. I love the OR is has been the best job I have ever had or could ask for. But it was time to move up so volia RN school. One thing that I worry about is losing a lot of the great skills I have learned in nursing school. So what area of nursing is going to benefit the graduate nurse the most all the while making a confident and competent nurse?:D

Specializes in PCU, Home Health.

When I was in school a nurse told me that PCU was a great place to start because you get some critical care aspects and since you have 4 patients you get to work on time management too.

I would say though- start where you have a passion- if you want to change down the road you can always brush up on skills that you don't use in the OR.

Specializes in ICU, CCU, Trauma, neuro, Geriatrics.

As a new grad, I say go where you want to go.. Everyone starts somewhere and if it is in a unit/facilty/position you have dreamed about then go for it. If that position isn't available right now then find one that is close to what you want so you can get some experience and apply for your dream job. When and if you get bored or burned out at a job, find another one that is interesting. Nursing is awesome in that you can go everywhere with your license!

-I about to start my pre-nursing classes and am finding myself quite lost with all of the acronyms- what's PCU? -primary care?

Specializes in Med-Surg, Peds.

PCU is progressive care unit :)

The best place to start at for a new RN differs from person to person but a lot of my professors and nurses from my clinical rotations say that med-surg is the way to go, since you will be able to see a variety of cases that will prepare you for any specialty area you want to go to.
