I'll be starting my new job as a RN at a family practice in 1 week. I was wondering what shoes you all recommend? I didn't have proper nursing shoes through nursing school (cheap tennis shoes), but I would like to buy something really comfortable... if they came in colors other than white, that would be great too :) I heard Nursemates are comfortable. Any suggestions?

Check out thewalkingcompany.com and search shoes by brand. Look for Dansko's. Total deliciousness for your feet! They come in everything from your basic white, to leopard print... LOVE them! =)

Dansko's are great if your feet hurt, but they have a heel and eventually your hip will hurt. I recommend you find out what kind of arch you have and buy accordingly. You have to replace your shoes every 6 months or so. Really. So don't blow the bank on Dansko's if you work in family practice. Dansko's can't be resoled, so you are out of your $120. If you buy cheap Dankso's you might be surprised because the soles break down. Of course, when I had plantar faciitis from walking on concrete floors in an Urgent Care, Dansko was the only way to go. I got two pair and alternated them. Shoes for Crews make work shoes for waitresses and I've found these to be awesome, although I do stumble on the carpet sometimes (slip resistant). Sketchers are great for flat footed people. New Balance for high arch people. You are lucky to have a new job in family practice. Find out what your coworkers recommend. They will love you just for asking!
Wow.. thank you! I was thinking about Sketchers or these NurseMate shoes: Edie - Black - Nurse Mates Womens
These just look so comfortable and are comparable to the price of Sketchers. I don't care for Danko's from what I saw, mostly b/c of the heel. I already have back issues.. and it doesn't look like it would help that.

Alegria Shoes and $59 Closeout Alegria Shoes from the Original Alegria Shoes Shop
These shoes rock, period! They come in the "mary jane" option which is the closed back. They are the only shoes that do not kill me on a 12 hr ICU shift.

Alegria's are really nice. Most of the styles are too open for where I work. I tried on the basic clog and it was comfy but too open on the front. I think I may get some for personal use. I shocked myself and walked out w/Dansko's but it doesn't sound like that would fit your needs.
My suggestion is don't rule out skechers even if you have a high arch. I read the comment they're only good for flat footed but I'm high arched and I love them. Also my foot is pretty narrow, not quite the classic narrow as they fit but will hurt, but I have zero padding on my foot and I can feel it if I step wrong.
I seriously can't say enough good things about the shape ups and their comfort. I had zero pain after shifts. There was no break in period for me. I knew immediately tryng them on how they'd be and I've had them since January, only minimal breakdown. I really think I may miss them, but they're not practical where I work now b/c of the cleaning of them.

After 15 years of nursing and being on my feet continously, I have plantar faciitis and tendonitis, and I also have wide feet. I have found the MOST comfortable shoes are Sketchers. They come in the wide sizes I need and also have the arch support I need for my other problems. I have tried the other more expensive shoes, but Sketchers are WAY more comfortable. Good Luck in your career.

I like Alegria Shoes too, comfortable and lots of amazing colors to choose from. if you'd like to read more about the brand, check out their official site: http://www.alegriashoes.com and facebook page, http://facebook.com/alegriashoes. they run contests and giveaways from time to time. The best thing to do I recommend is find a local store that carries them, try them on and you will know if you like them or not. Good luck hunting for your fav shoes.
