I recently completed my BSN (LPN-BSN in December) and am working in a general critical care unit. I am planning to cross-train to the emergency department as well. I hope to move to a warm(er) climate after I have completed a year or two at this hospital. I am looking for advice about screening criteria for the next employer. How do I "screen" potential employers? There is no rush - I am learning so much in my job and enjoy what I do, but again, I want to live somewhere warmer (I live in ND) when I get that all important first year of RN experience. I have visited the Dallas area quite a few times over the past year and really like it (yes, even the heat!). I just don't know a lot about 'interviewing' hospitals.

I think this question is really general... what constitutes a good hospital for you? There are many good hospitals in a city like Dallas. A couple of places I look for information is the US News and World Report Best Hospital list, the NCI Cancer Center designations (since I'm an oncology nurse), if a hospital has Magnet status, etc. I am an out of state applicant too, and I went and interviewed at my two top choice hospitals. I met the managers, the HR people, and toured the unit and made my decision based on that experience. It comes down to personal preference, as different hospitals have different environments. Hope that helps.
It is a very general question. Your process of choosing, based on specific criteria, is very helpful. Thank you so much!

Please be cognizant that every hospital position in the area receives several hundred applicants.
Thank you. I really appreciate the advice.
