Best Florida City for my situation?

Published

Hey everyone,

I just moved to Ocala, Florida from Queens, New York. I am a 23 year old, single female, with no kids, and plan on going to school to get my RN degree and other degrees in Florida and I want to live in a great Florida city! I know that everyone has a different idea of the perfect city based on where they are in life so here is my picture of a great place to live right now:

1. tons of diversity and different cultures!

2. big, hip, metropolitan city! (as similar to Manhattan/New York City as it can be)

3. lots of single, young professionals! (23 years old and older)

4. great nightlife and entertainment!

5. lots of nursing opportunities (RN, BSN or higher), decent apartments and resonable cost of living!

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Any advice would be appreciated!

Nothing quite like NY. Miami possibly?

Thanks All_Smiles_RN,

I was thinking about Miami also but I was concerned about the cost of living. Is there an area in Miami that is resonable for someone just starting out?

I personally wouldn't recommend Miami. I'd go for Tampa or Orlando, though Jax is a good choice too. I spent about 45 years of my life in Jax. Not much night life in Ocala 'cept Ale House on a Tuesday nite.

I would suggest Tampa....I've never lived in Miami however from what I hear its more difficult due to the diverse population. I knew a few nurses who did travel assignments in Miami and had a difficult time because they were not bilingual and alot of the population in Miami speak Spanish and very little english.

I have been in Tampa for 6 years and love it. There is alot of culture, museums, the performing arts center and quite a bit of varied nightlife.

I myself am into karaoke and I never have a hard time finding a place to go spend the evening singing and socializing however I have a few younger friends that know the younger hangouts.

As far as education there is a community college and several universities. My daughter is currently attending nursing school at South University and loves it. Its a relatively new school here in Tampa (originally based out of Miami) so when she enrolled there was no waiting list for the nursing program.

Private message me if you want more info or need specific questions answered and if you do decide to move to this area we can exchange emails and I will help you figure out what you need. Ive worked agency around this area so I am familiar with the area hospitals also.

Good Luck on your future.

Thanks 58flyer and Kymmi,

Thank you both so much for your ideas. Tampa, Orlando and Jax seem like great places and I am excited to figure it all out and finally pick a place!

To 58flyer--I haven't been in Ocala long (I just moved here in June) but I can tell that it isn't the place for me. You are right, there is no nightlife here!!

To Kymmi-- You are right about Miami. I don't speak spanish so I could have a hard time adjusting there. It is good to know that Tampa has a great nightlife/entertainment and nursing schools. I will private message you my Tampa questions and concerns. Thank you so much for your help!

I forgot in my last message to add that I think Orlando is a wonderful place to visit....I do go there sometimes but as far as living there I have a feeling that it is alot more tourist structured than I'd like to live in.

The south side of Orlando into Kissimmee is the tourist area. Northern and downtown Orlando avoid most of that. Orlando probably meets most of your requirements, although nothing is going to compare to NY. Orlando is home to two large hospital systems (6 hospitals in the downtown area come to mind, not to mention the outliers), so their are opportunities to move around and move up. Orlando is home to diverse cultures. Several schools to choose from to become a nurse... university, private, and community colleges.

Miami Beach. There is nothing else even close.

Thanks Kymmi,All_Smiles_RN, and bigsyis,

Thank you all so much for your advice!

To Kymmi-- Thanks for your ideas about Orlando and I will contact

you with any questions about Tampa.

To All_Smiles_RN--Thanks for your thoughts on Orlando. I know that

in some ways Manhattan, New York is in a league of its own but I

do want to be in a great, big city so I don't feel as if I am missing

out on anything. How is the cost of living in Orlando? Is there an

area in Orlando that is resonable for someone just starting out?

To bigsyis-- Thanks for your thoughts on Miami, Miami Beach in

particular. My only concern would be the language barrier and cost

of living. In your opinion, would a non-spanish speakng person make

it in Miami? How is the cost of living in Miami? Is it resonable for

someone just starting out?

The language issue wouldn't be a problem, but I am not really sure about the cost of living. It has been a while since I've been there. There are surrounding communities that you might want to look at, and still have access to the activities in Miami Beach. Good luck!
