Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!
Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.
i think it comes down to a personal choice, as long as you have one i don’t think professor would care if it was $25 or $250. from reading reviews you get what you pay for on a cheaper steth, there has been insistences where a student can have errors on their care plans due to missed diagnosis because they did not hear properly or weren’t able to differentiate between lung sounds. however, some do just fine with the cheaper stethoscope. perhaps, when your at the store "test drive" the different models and see what you prefer.
congrats to all the new nursing students at BCC! i am sincerely happy for all of you. After you celebrate the acceptance letter, buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life ( i kid you not) i wish i believed it when i started the program in september...be ready to sacrifice a lot, i mean A LOT !!! it is very exciting and exhausting at the same time... Do you think it's feasible to work 20-25 hours a week while in the program?? I just accepted a new job which I need in order to help my fiance with our expenses. I am really hoping I can swing school and work. Can you please give me your honest opinion? Thanks :)!
The $25 stethoscope is a cheap one. I am an EMT and have been using the ULTRASCOPE and purchased it from RNsupply.com. Apart from the $200 stethos, this is the best one I have used and it ran me about $95 with engraving and shipping.
hey krissy3, honestly - yes u can do, many people in my class are actually doing it ( and they are doing just fine). really, who can really afford not to work right now? Anyway, try to stay calm even when it feels like you are buried with all the work and there is no way you can do it all. Take it lightly and don't stress yourself, and you will be fine! it is a lot of stress - you will be having a test every week ( on top of validation skills, video validations, and all the paperwork for the clinicals). take measures not to burn out ( this is how exactly everyone is feeling right now:crying2:) and take a very good care of yourself! Enjoy it, it is alot of fun too:D
And krissy3, they have the package posted online on bergen.edu in case you want to start working on getting your paperwork together. It is the same one u will receive in the mail
Thank you SO much, GlossyViolet, for the advice and encouragement!!! My sister is a nurse as well so I have heard a lot of her stories from nursing school (some were pretty crazy!). I am anxious to start so that I can just get through it- one day at a time! I really hope to meet friends in my section so that we can all motivate each other. Thanks again for your help. I'm sure I will have more questions leading up to our first day. I am pretty nervous to say the least, but excited all at once.
I'm in 2nd level now (going to 3rd level soon ) I work full-time and was able to get through level one. I think it's do-able, just prioritize. Granted, you won't have a social life, the work load is enough to keep you busy when you're not working.
just a word of advice: DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR HAYES. TAKE BAUDO FOR BASICS!!! lol enjoy :)
Thanks missmoone! Are you currently in the nursing program?? Any recommendations for the first week of clinicals? I will admit that I am pretty nervous!
Yes I'm in Level 2. hmmm the first week of clinicals .. if you've never worked in the medical field before (which I haven't ) it'll be exciting and new. You'll be practicing in the school lab on mannequins before you're actually in the hospital setting.( you have to pass a number of validations before you do go to the hospital for clinicals). If for no other advice heeded, heed this one.. practice practice practice.. You'll be doing tons of validations for most of the semester. if you can go on saturdays to the lab and practice that's great, if you can manage it go during the day as well that's great. If not just practice at home.. use your family members as practice patients. Any practice you can get to be comfortable with procedures by the time you have to film validations will help.
By the way I work full time 40+ hrs/wk and I'm in teh program.. it can be done.. but you just have to know how to manage your time well. And you will learn that much as you go along. Good luck!
