Hey guys,
I saw that there was no post for our group so I decided to create on. How is everyone doing with their Hesi? Also, is someone who is accepted into their program declines admission, do they open up a spot for someone else?
kaitlynelisabeth,
what is the key to success in the nursing program given that about 50% of the original cohort does not make it to the NCLEX? Also, I heard that regardless of the sections you chose (ie. 181-101, 181-102, 181-103) that you are randomly assigned to a professor. In order words, the professor you register for may not be the professor you get.
Also, thanks LMTK and congrats to you as well. I don't know about the future, what I do want in my hands right now is the info packet lol. I wonder if the Spring 2013 packet on the nursing website is the same we will be receiving.
Be confident, not cocky. Believe in yourself you can do this it all can be done. You will hear horror stories don't believe them. Half the battle is figuring out how to answer the questions most likely two will be incorrect two will be right. But, one of those right answers is the BEST answer. Get the book fundamentals for success it will teach you how to answer questions. You will realize despite the horror stories everything can be done and done right. If you love it, you will do fine. As for professors you should have the professor you register with however when you start attending clinical in November you will be assigned a clinical professor most likely someone you will be seeing in validation and Clinical conference each week. Study. Study a lot. Read ahead understand what your reading and writing when you are studying. It will cut your study time in half. It's not easy level one but I can say it is doable. Be ready for the all nighters (despite what everyone says there is no way to not cram) I will hopefully be finishing level one on the 13th!! Going into finals with a B+ in the three classes. As for the spring packet being similar to your packet I am not sure because there is a new dean. You can definitely look at the spring packet for a general idea and check out the forums on here from past nursing levels this site is helpful however do not use professors names.
hey, guys!!
Do you think we really need "ALL" the required books in the info packet??
There are 10 required textbooks for 3 courses (181,182, and 183) including reference such as medical dictionaries.
Since most of us have smart phones and there are good medical reference apps used by health professionals currently working in the filed, i dont think we really have to buy all of them.
what do you think?
Definitely plan on getting the most current 2013 version of the drug guide I use Mosbys for my desk reference and lippincotts pocket version for my clinical rotations. If you only want to buy one definitely get the pocket guide you will be looking up meds in clinical for your assigned patients every time. The comprehensive manual of diagnostic lab values is also one you want to be pretty current. From experience in regards to the textbooks in my current class there are people who never bought it at all and those like myself that have the textbook + optional texts + the nclex prep and supplements.
You need a good care plan book you are required to do a few care plans and know how to do them inside and out a good care plan book will help you the more current care planning books will have a larger focus of health promotion which has become a somewhat recent current trend. The incredibly easy series is awesome great quick reads and if your lost or know nothing it is written in a very clear, "Im a new student nurse, I don't remember A&P, I have no health care background" type of language. Fundamentals most books will be the same because there are only slight variations and new updates to the basics of nursing which if you have an out dated book it's okay- your professor will do PowerPoints. The CD for fundamentals is very good and "unlocks" the website.
The physical assessment book by Jarvis our professor used the 5th edition and we all had the 6th edition besides added chapters or page numbers they were the same material (not an issue).
Pharmacology, the textbook is wonderful I do have the most recent copy- there is always going to be a new drug or side effect your professor covers the major changes, updates very clearly in lecture PowerPoints.
Just a side note to everyone because my class was caught off guard. The iPhone, droid smartphone apps are awesome great reference but you do not have service in the hospital. Many times, the charge nurses carry a hospital issued phone to use because their is either no service or cell phone use is not allowed. So having the pocket drug guide and a pocket procedure check list is the best bet. You do use them a lot as for "right away books" you won't enter clinical until probably November. I did get both the normal textbook as well as the pocket guides.
My section did not wear uniforms until the first day of off site clinical in March. However the other section of level one was required to wear them to Monday clinical conference and to any of their valuations. My professor was able to provide us with the "procedure check lists" so we all returned that textbook.
Check the nursing bulletin boards in the Bwing outside the nursing office there are always flyers of students from various levels looking to sell their books. Used is definitely fine- because usually if you require an access code you can purchase that separately (I know the textbooks say you cannot purchase if separately) but I have had friends log onto the textbook site and be able to "purchase access now" the night before exams. Definitely try to buy used or amazon the only one textbook I would not recommend renting on chegg is fundamentals because you refer to it for reference forever it's where all the answers to those tricky nclex questions are many students in my section that rented the fundamentals book are purchasing it now- best purchase worth every penny is a good stethoscope. Use allheart.com they have tons of sales and discounts I have a Littman cardiology I and I love it, there is no requirements that i am aware of in regards to particular stethoscopes but don't waste your money on the cheap ones- trust me you don't lose them and people in my section that bought the cheap stethoscopes ended up buying the real deal within the month or so.
