Being pulled toward nursing

Published

I am currently taking classes that was suppose to go toward a Radiologic Technologist program. I decided I needed a plan B in case I don't get accepted this first year. At my age (45), I don't feel like I need to wait another year to try again to be accepted. As I've been researching my plan B, I have taken a serious interest in nursing. When younger, I never considered myself a nurse, but as I've gotten older, I believe my idea of what a nurse is and does, is quite different. I guess my question would be not IF I can do it at my age, because I know I can with all the classes I've taken to this point, but if I SHOULD. I am concerned about being hired at my age of course, but I just need to be sure I am making the right choice for me and my husband. I am remarried (just 2 years) and my children are 21 and 23. Is there anyone here who had picked nursing over another occupation and are you glad you did? Is nursing a better choice than radiology tech.?

My husband is so supportive, he just says to do whatever I want, but I would love some opinions or suggestions. I don't want to pick the wrong profession at this time in my life. I have already had a couple and don't want to reinvent myself again :) .

There is no good answer to your question....based on anything objective, anyway.

Some people can't stand nursing and are beating feet out as fast as they possible can (https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/breaking-free-nursing-884453.html). Others, such as myself, still enjoy it and plan to continue. It's really not nearly so cut-and-dry as "which one is better across the board". It's what's better based on you and your preferences!

Shadow a nurse before you switch career paths. Nursing is quite competitive and entry into school is far from a guarantee. That's without considering the job hunt after you graduate and pass the NCLEX.

If you want to go into nursing, it needs to be your Plan A, not your fallback choice.

I totally agree! While it was going to be my plan B, it is quickly becoming my plan A. I know I have a huge heart and care greatly for people. All things medical interest me. So I know I have a good start there. The getting accepted, and the finding a job after are my biggest concerns. At 45, I am no "spring chicken"! Thank you for your input!
