Been out of school a year...still not licensed

Published

I graduated LPN school, in NY state, with good grades in June of '08. I continued working my job that carried me through school until I hoped would be at the end of that summer. Well, here I am in 11/09 and still working at that job. I did take the NCLEX in May of '09 but to my greatest astonishment I failed. I studied hard. Only got to 85 questions and I was sure I passed b/c I thought I knew every answer on the test. Boy, was I wrong. Anyway, failing that made me really ashamed of myself; I felt stupid. So, I figured it was a sign for me to not to continue in nsg field b/c it just wasn't meant for me.

I just landed a great private duty job, for extra money, working for an elderly woman who just more or less needs help cleaning up after herself and companionship. This has really sparked my interest in the field again and I would really like to take my NCLEX again. Does anyone know if my opportunity for that has expired? A friend of mine told me I only had 365 days after graduation to take the test. I just need to know if I have time to pace myself with studying for the nclex or if I'm on a time crunch. I'd rather avoid having to take any remedial courses being that my finances are a bit too tight at the moment.

Any insight with be greatly appreciated. I've been working a lot of nights so it seems by the time I get up my the ncsbn offices are closed.

It might be a good idea to call the NY Board of Nursing to determine if you are still eligible to retake the NCLEX-PN. Good luck with your endeavors!
