Becoming a Nurse

Hello :)
I am looking for information on becoming a nurse. I am looking for a 9 month program in New York (Long Island; Nassua County) i am willing to travel. Can anyone recommend one to me? Also i was wondering about what the starting pay for a nurse with this training is? Also if you could point me in the direction of a good place to work in this area, with benefits and employment. Also if you can share some information like requirements and such i would be very appreciative.

With just what you've posted here, I used Google to find a ton of information, so I'd suggest you do the same: you'll answer most if not all of your questions quickly!

I can tell you, to start, that you're talking about an LPN program; they can usually be found through BOCES vocational schools. Not all BOCES have LPN programs (I found through Google that Nassau BOCES does not), but there are Suffolk County Boces programs that do. However, the minimum time is 11 months for a full-time day program; if you need to go part-time or nights, count on 17 months. This, too, assumes that you get right into the next class: there are frequently waiting lists although I don't know what the situation is like on LI. You'd have to make a couple of phone calls to the admissions offices of the schools to get that info.

As for employment, there's very limited opportunities for LPNs in NY within the hospitals (where the pay typically is best) but there's always opportunities for long term care (nursing homes) and with experience, home health care. Does this interest you?

I'm in NYS, but not LI, so I can't direct you any better than that. Honestly, I'd use Google to get started on what's in your area for schools, and then make a few calls :)

I am currently in BOCES school of practical nursing in central islip in suffolk county....They have a full time 11 month program...But you have to take a NET exam and if you score 90 or higher you get into the full time one if not...you will only get into the night one which is 18 months and to even get into the night one you need a 76 or higher on the NET..than you have to go on the interview process and if they choose you, your in!!! I like it..its very precise...the next NET exam is in January so if you call 411 and ask for Boces in Central islip you can get some info..good luck

also there is a waiting list for my school but I got right in once i passed (i think i got an 86) they made an interveiw and accepted me immediatley so im guessing if you do good on the test you wont have to be on a waiting list
