Becoming an NP with a low GPA

Published

I want to be a nurse practitioner very badly but I didn't take college or nursing school very seriously and I studied enough to get by, making my GPA about 2.8. I have experience as an interventional radiology nurse, NICU nurse, and med-surg nurse. I'm interested in a becoming ANY kind of NP (medical or psychiatric) and I am about to apply, but I have to choose a specialty. What is the EASIEST specialty to get accepted into NP school??

Specializes in OB/GYN, Psych.

I strongly advise you not to use whatever is easiest to get into as a deciding factor here. I get where you're coming from, but being a NP will (hopefully) be a long term career for you. You don't want to put all that effort, time, and money into something you may end up regretting. I think you need to really think about your strengths as a nurse, the patient population you are most interested in and enjoy working with most, what kind of environment you'd prefer (inpatient, outpatient, etc.). That way you will increase the odds of not just becoming a NP, but actually enjoying your work and being successful and happy.

Specializes in Cardiac, Home Health, Primary Care.

It might also be good to speak to the nursing schools you are considering and explaining the situation. They may have tips for improving your odds of acceptance.

Everyone makes stupid mistakes sometimes so you may have to work a bit harder to make up for your past school work.

As PP said, though, go with the specialty you love to make that hard work worth it.
