Bcc - Hpc1030

Published

I went to sign up for my pre-reqs this semester wanting to get this class out of the way. However, do to the fact that I'm just starting at BCC this coming term (Jan 09), my signups were not until Nov 17 (past Mon). Before this date, every one of the HCP core classes was overfilled.

I had heard that it is possible to take the course at other locations.. like McFatter, Sheridan tech. etc. But when i looked at their course hours and whatnot on their site, their classes are 5 weeks, about 6 hours a day, 3 days a week. This is far diff from BCC's 6 weeks 6 hours 1 day a week... has anyone taken the course at another location in a place where they only was 1 day a week for six hours like BCC?

Either that or does anyone know if there will be another 4 classes opening up later in the semester? once the first 4 have ended?

Well actually, 2 of the 4 classes are scheduled for the beginning of the semester. The other 2 are for the second half. Its possible they may open up another class, I think they did it this semester. As far as taking the class somewhere else, you can take it at Sheridan only. I called and asked, and was told thats the only location. However, they have it online, and you only go in once for like an hour for orientation, and then one full day for CPR. Its a 90 hr course because it covers some of the other core classes we need. I don't know exactly which ones, but it is most of them. I did check to make sure BCC will take this class, and they will. You can also check to see if someone can put you in the class. I see they are already overbooked (one of the classes had 40 seats and 46 were filled up). The other thing is if you don't absolutely "need" to take it now, next semester you can go to an advisor and have them register you for it before your registration appt date. I happened to be speaking with an advisor a couple of weeks ago, and she had asked me if I was going to take it, and I told her I was going to register for it on my appt date. She told me it would be filled up, so she could register for it for me then. She said they can do this ONLY on non-credit courses. Credit courses must wait until the appt date. So, thats an option for next semester. Also, BCC's HCP0130 is like $260 where Sheridan's is $219, and that includes some of those other core classes, too. So its cheaper. Thing is about those CAE courses we need, they expire in 2 years, so its advised to wait until you're accpeted into the program to take them (thats what the Assistant Dean of Nursing said). You're free to take them anytime, but you'll have to take them again before they expire, so thats why they suggest to do it that way.

Oh an by the way, what campus are you attending? I can maybe suggest some professors.

I've heard Gregory Reeder and Vanessa Hormann are great there for A&P. Are you taking Chem and A&P1 this semester?

There are some seats open right now for an HCP0130 starting in March on Fridays 4-10pm. There are only like 4-5 seats left. Looks like they just added more seats to an existing class. Hope you can grab it!

sadly I missed my shot, was not expecting another class to open and was not checking it regularly, i will start doing so though.

Also the 2 teachers you recommended do not seem to have any classes open. The schedule i was originally going to sign up for would have been mon and wed between like 10am and 5pmish... however, by the time open signups rolled around, all i could manage was 2pm-9:30pm >.

Thanks for the tips btw, the teachers i did end up getting are Robert Olton for A&P1, Elena Cainas for the lab and Joseph Lawry for Chem

Anyone who knows anything about them the info is appreciated

Also. the lab coat we need, has to be bought from the BCC book store? heh, my mom is a nurse and shes trying to make me use one of her old ones... dont know if theres any requirements on it.

Just keep checking regularly. It wasn't another class that was opened up, just several seats. However, you can always go to Central and see if they will put you in. I saw one class had 50 seats, but had 70 people enrolled. They might do it. As far as the other filled classes, just keep checking on that, too. I know I have seen Vanessa Hormann's class filled, and then a seat or two became available and then they were gone again. I got into an A&P2 class that I wanted that was filled by checking ALL the time. Plus, you can check right before the semester starts when payment is due because people who can't pay for the classes by the due date will drop the class. But seriously, I would check everyday. As far as the professors you have, check the ratemyprofessor website:

http://ratemyprofessors.com/SelectTeacher.jsp?sid=1278

And as far as the lab coat, I can't answer that question. I did not have to purchase one for A&P1 and I will not have to do it for 2 either. I don't know why some professors require it while others do not, but since I didn't have to but it, I don't know whats acceptable and what isn't.

By the way, if you're willing to go to downtown campus, there is a professor there that I've heard great things about, Joy Stewart, and she has openings for A&P1 on Mondays and Wednesdays 8-915am.

Thank you so much. You have been extremely helpful :D. I will keep checking because my "perfect class schedule" may still be available. I am also going to go speak to a counselor at Central campus. When i first went for advising right after being admitted to BCC i sat for over an hour in the main building i think it was building 19 if i remember. After waiting more then an hour they told me i had to go to the nursing building, 8 and talk to someone there but i didnt even get to a see a counselor or anything there, just a lady at the front desk... do you know who specifically I should try to contact and where I go to see them for advising specifically on the nursing career path and/or HCP class override?

You're welcome. Unfortunately, I don't know much about Central campus. I attend North, and I know the name of one of the health career advisors there. I looked on the "technical education program advisor" (which is what I think the actual title is) page in the directory, and there is one person at Central campus listed in Bldg. 8, her name is Suzette Jean-Louis. She may be the one to talk to. Here's the link to the contact page:

I have a meeting with the girl at North this week, actually. If you don't have any luck by then, I can ask her who the contact is at Central. I meet with her on Wednesday.

Hope that helps.
