Hi, everyone. I have a couple of questions for any Bayada nurses out there, if anyone's listening. I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

1. I graduated last year, May 2009, took my boards in June, and have been working on a cardiac stepdown (tele) unit since July 2010. I have passed IV certification, telemetry, critical care and my ACLS courses in this first year. I'm coming up on my official one year of experience and now really want to pursue the reason I went to nursing school: to work in home health/hospice. Does anyone know Bayada's policy on hiring newer nurses? Do they require one or two years of experience?

2. Do Bayada's current/starting pay rates compete with local hospitals?

3. Are most cases just like hourly (+/-) home visits, or are there a lot of private duty cases where you spend the entire shift with one patient?

4. How is scheduling handled? More specifically, do you work 8s, 10s, or 12s? Days, or nights, or a combination of both? How are weekends and holidays handled?

5. What kind of training/orientation is offered?

6. I know there's a whole host of situations you encounter in your day, but if you could describe a "typical" workday, what would you say (including time actually spent with patients, what skills needed to be performed, how much time is spent in documentation, etc.)

I have been working for Bayada three years this April (as an LPN). I work private duty for adult trach/vent clients. If you are looking for a "visiting nurse" job I don't know job requirements or pay, etc. But I'll try to answer your questions:

1. They require a year experience for RN/LPN jobs. I worked in a nursing home prior to here for 14 months. Your hospital experience sounds ideal.

2. I'm not sure what RN nurses make but my pay increased from the nursing home. The benefits are not great though ($$$ health insurance, no sick time, must work 2,000 hours before you get any PTO.) Again, this could be different for you.

3. I only work private duty so I'm not sure about the visits. There are a lot of cases that need only 1 or 2 shifts a week for fill in. I started by orienting with a few clients and taking the shifts no one wants.

4. Scheduling depends on each client, such as the client is allotted a certain amount of skilled nursing hours and they can choose how they want to use them. Some clients get 8 hours daily, 16 or 24. Some only get 5 or 6 days a week. Some families want night nursing or afternoon, some get days. Basically you pick the shifts you want. They may call you to do more though. Mostly 8 hr shifts, I have seen some 12s too. I work day or evening shifts, no nights. I'll work weekends too. Everyone works holidays if they fall on your day unless you switch or request off.

5. I went to a vent/trach training class. It was great and I got CE hours too. They precepted me for over 40 hours before I felt comfortable working on my own. I originally wanted to work in peds but since I had no vent/trach experience they sent me to adults first and I wound up finding enough work here.

6. A typical day shift for me is to come in and get report from family or nurse. Assess the client in bed. Check all equipment/supplies. Feeding, dressing, bathing, trach care, wound care, suctioning, med administration. Assist client in things they want to do. I go out a lot with clients. I have 1 to 2 pages of documentation a shift, basically a narrative of my day. Nothing too difficult.

do they accept foreign-trained nurses? visa sponsorships? i took all the exams (nclex ielts, etc) but i don't have hospital experience. will bayada be able to help me? thanks.
