Barry CRNA Starting 2018

Published

Hello all! I just thought I would start a thread for those of us applying. I have started my application and I am working on my personal statement now. How are you all doing?

I have taken the GRE and passed my CCRN. I still need to get my PALS. I also need to ask for my letters of recommendation and send in my school transcripts & GRE scores. I'm going to try to apply for the Tampa campus.

Ah, very good point as well.

Very good point. Do you think it is possible to work a day or 2 a month per diem or with an agency after the first semester?

I don't know that it will possible to even work per diem while in the program. I have friends in another local program and its possible bc their first semester is completely online, but i hear Barry's program is really tough. Personally, I plan to keep my per diem job and work in between breaks, but working is not a part of my financial plan.

Oh okay, I was just wondering. But keeping the per diem job sounds like a good idea

If you take all of the headstart courses, it might be possible to work maybe one day a week during the first part of the first semester (there are 2 blocks). But there are NO "breaks" in between semesters. Between semester 1 and 2, you have your entire regional class. Between semester 2 and 3, your will be working more than full time at the hospital (clinicals). And forget about working any time during the semester past the first block of first semester. It's extremely rigorous, the couple hundred dollars you would make per shift probably won't be worth not studying. Just letting you know what to expect!

Are there breaks between summer and fall as well as fall and spring?

There are no breaks ever. You might have a break from didactic work, but you will always have clinicals. They have you work more hours in between semesters, so there is no time that you will ever be free for the entire duration of the program. Your only saving grace is that you get 40 hours per semester of "CDTO" (clinical/didactic time off) that you can request to use. Some people request to use it to take a week off in between semesters so that they can try to go on a vacation or something, but the wise ones use it during the semester to have more study time before tests or finals.

Also, not sure how it is at the other sites, but at Broward a 12hr shift isn't just a 12hr shift. Your case may run over, sometimes you'll have pre-ops for the next day to do, and also you'll have about 3 care plans a week to do. Plus we have a presentation to give sometime here in the summer.

This is anesthesia residency. At the end you'll have well over 3000hrs of clinical time and over 1000 cases. By senior semester you are basically staff at the hospital, expected to run your own case etc.

Has anyone been called for an interview for this month yet?

Not yet ;( my application was sent end of march and completed early April..

All they say when you ask is that they're accepting 90 students and still conducting interviews D:

It's going to be a long summer...sigh!!
