Bare minimum prerequisites

Published

Anyone have experience applying with bare minimum prereqs, particularly 40 out of 60 semester hours for example? I was curious what the acceptance rate was for students who didn't have them totally completed or near completion. Thanks for your time :)

From what I have heard, your chances are EXTREMELY slim if you have not fully completed your prereqs before application to the program (meaning if you apply with courses in progress). Most all applicants have already completed prereqs, and have grades with a high GPA, it's that competitive out there.

Depends on the school. Are you looking at 2 yr, 4 yr, accelerated BSN, Direct Entry MSN? The school will let you know on its admissions checklist what courses you must have completed in order to apply. Some want all prereqs completed prior to application, or prior to enrollment. Others have minimal prereqs and list the other courses as coreqs so the main benefit to taking them ahead of time is to free up your load of everything except for nursing courses once you get in.

Depends on your school.

Mine: 2 semesters worth of pre-reqs totaling 33 credits.

1st semester pre-reqs are used to compile your GPA which will be 60% of the points used to determine who gets in. The rest of the pre-reqs may be taken during the application or before you get in the program. Only thing you must do is pass them with a C+ or higher or your acceptance will be revoked. No preference is given to those who have completed all pre-reqs by the application deadline vs. those who have only completed the 1st pre-reqs.

I have seen other schools in my area state they would give extra points to applicants who have completed any co-requisites before applying. Every school is different.

It really depends for sure. Overall, RN's are getting saturated now despite the hype in last few years. Its looks like normal turnover now, with lip service from schools so they can expand (the only ones doing well in today's depression).

So some schools are taking all comers. And then some schools are trying to play guessing games by forcing students to take bs courses because they can't stop school or start repaying student loans. Don't give up on them, but darn sure don't count on them because they have shown contempt in their strategy: to screw the mass students.

Look at all the possible schools again. Many have expanded and need students. Use the schools to your advantage, but don't wait around for a non-committed assurance. If EVERY counselor tells you something almost completely different, take all the classes you can if its cheap and convenient: then prepare to move on as quick as you can figure out which way to go. Good luck!!
