Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster!i have 3 years experience on a busy surgical ward. I have an interview on Monday for a band 6 post on my ward. I need to do a short presentation on how I would implement a training lead nurse on the ward.
Now I'm stumped!
So far, (very rough draft) I have incorporated clinical governance, mandatory training, that I feel it's really a 2 person job; maybe one for the RNs and one for untrained staff.
Id like to talk about budget constraints; time adjusting people who come in/stay late to complete e learning but I don't really have much knowledge about the budget!
I can draw on some experience of arranging training as a link nurse for another speciality, but that takes minimal effort on my part, and it's up to staff to arrange to be present, I just provide the dates!
i think I just need some advice on the direction to take this.
Ive seen you all give such wonderful advise, hope you have a little left for me!!
Do you have access to a practice development team at your trust? They might be able to offer some guidance as to what they'd like from a link nurse whose responsible for training in your department? Cost is a thing to consider, as is staffing, in the end, for someone to be able to undertake a role like this effectively, the nurse doing this will need time out of the numbers to organise themselves and spend time helping nurses with their training and development. Maybe think about discussing the benefits the role would bring to your department, to individual nurses and to the nurse undertaking the role as well.
If you're thinking about making it a two person role, why not have an experienced HCA be responsible for the development and support of training for non registered staff? It'd be excellent for that individual's development and have them supported by the registered nurse undertaking this role.
Just one polite request here, please don't refer to unregistered support staff as "untrained", it's really disrespectful to them and dismisses the training they undertake and the excellent contribution they make towards patient care. I've also found it can scare patients or lead to poorly informed stories in our much loved sensationalist tabloid press here.
Also, how long do you have for the presentation? It's surprising how quickly you can end up making loads of slides and going over the allotted time.
