bad luck streak-feeling down

Published

Seems like I have had a lot of icky cases lately, and I'm feeling a little down right now. What I wouldnt give for a nice *normal* lady partsl delivery about now. I would even go for a difficult delivery as long as it's not like some of the train-wreck cases I've been having lately. It doesnt seem to matter if I'm in the nursery, in L&D, or in postpartum. It's following me like the black plague. I would hate to know what nick-names my co-workers have been coming up with for me lately. It's gotta get better right? They can't ALL crash on me! They just CANT, the statistics prove it, the probabilty for it just isnt there, yet that seems to be what happens! I mean, really, a preterm repeat c-section in labor walks on the unit ruptured with a cord prolapse, then abrupts waiting for the surgeon, and goes into DIC? what are the chances? And thats not the least of what I've seen this past 2 months. Anyone else out there seem to think 2009 is trying to run them into the ground? Thanks for letting me vent.

My black cloud was following me a few weeks ago. I know what you mean. I assisted at an IUFD delivery and she hemorrhaged, went down to OR for a D&C and got 4u PRBCs. Then the next weekend, we had a term IUFD, and another lady came in at term w/ no prenatal care, in HELLP, crash section and coded baby for almost half an hour. That one upset everybody - OB attending walked out of the room crying, neo was shaken up, resident was almost crying, and so were we. And on top of that, I was taking care of a lady who'd had a ruptured ectopic (of course very early on) pregnancy, almost bled to death, and was very very upset about having lost the baby. It was just not a good few shifts.

Hopefully mine has gone away, and hopefully yours will too. :icon_hug:

How ironic! Me and a couple nurses were just disscussing that same thing except we call it black cloud. We have had a rough 2009. 2 sets of 20 weeks twins both pprom, 38 week multip complaining of SOB ends up with a PE, a healthy 39 week primi with no prior complications recieves an epidural then lays down FHR 160's 10 minutes later baby decels to 60's and stays, stat to OR, baby has no HR and no respirations at delivery, we code baby, push meds, get heart rate but baby never initiates a breath. The staff was completely stunned with no obvious answer to what had happened, no abruption, no rupture, not even a nuchal. The baby was transferred to NICU and within 30 minutes began having seizures. When a pt wakes up from general and you watch her face as the NICU doctor tells her that her baby most likely has severe brain damage, it keeps you up at night.

And that all happened in the last 2 weeks!

exactly why I can't work pospartum etc...I would get too bummed out...I am just a big teddy bear at heart....

I had that knick name a few years ago. my 3rd day working at a new hospital had my first percreta ( can you say disaster) then a few days later crash c/section then a few weeks after that had an abruption walk in with a live baby, 10 mins from door to baby I was quite proud of that of course we had 2 anesthesiologist starting lines and drawing blood admit assessment consisted of what are you allergic to and do you have any medical conditions. extra techs called from surgery one nurse cathing and one nurse shaving. Nursery having a fit after delivery because the hep b immunization consent was not signed prior to delivery( go figure) but thankfully the black cloud has receeded a little

Ok, it sounds like 2009 has just started with a BIG OB black cloud. The past month has been a nightmare for us as well...it seems like almost every delivery has been complicated.

We have had stillbirth, IUGR, premature birth, Rpt C/S with acreta ending up with hyst, etc... Every time I go to work, I think surely this is the day it will turn back around!

we had an increta-grew through an old incision, didn't end up with a hyster though lucky for her she was young. we got an update on mom and baby of the case I described and both are expected to pull through, mom was decently stable and baby was expecting a long stay but for prematurity not for his difficult delivery thank god. It was less than 10 min to cut time and considering we are a small hospital and dont have an OR staff or docs on hand that was pretty good. surgeon walked in in street clothes and cut without prep or anything- all the way through in one cut and bam that baby was out, intubated, and off to the nursery in minutes. amazing. transfer crew arrived not long thereafter. we've had several fetal demises already this year, transfered quite a few out, etc... I hope thinks start to look up for everyone who has black clouds hanging around. Hopefully with spring will come some "sunnier" deliveries!

Geez, Hoppermom, I read what you wrote and thought, Dang, that sounds just like my month.....and then I realized, um, we work at the same facility.

Here's to a better month in March!
