Background questions

Hello all! Hope everything is well.

I had some questions about my history/background that some of you could answer hopefully. I don't want to get too involved in nursing if this will prevent me from being a nurse.

While serving in the United States Marines I became very depressed, and admitted myself into a mental hospital for severe depression. A long story short, I was discharged from the Military with a General Under Honorable Discharge under the status of 'Personality Disorder' as the character of Discharge. All is fine now, I'm great and have been seeing a counselor while making progress. BUT...all being said; would this prevent me from obtaining a license as an RN?

All answers are appreciated!

It depends....in my state, questions about previously being treated for any mental health condition was not on my application when I applied to take the NCLEX, but I have heard that some BON's do ask this on their applications.

I would go to the BON website, print off or order an application, and read it to see what it requires.

It will tell you if such a disclosure is required or what type of background checks are done.

BON's do not perform "mystery" checks...if they tell you they check criminal, then they only check criminal, etc.

Specializes in Home Care.

Several years ago I had a bout with serious depression, went through intensive therapy and I've been fine for years.

When I applied to the FL BON I had to disclose this information. All they required was a letter from a counselor or doctor advising of my current condition.

Don't sweat it.

Okay, will do.

Thank you very much guys! :)
