Background Check for CRNA School

I am currently applying to several CRNA schools. I am a little worried about the background check if I am accepted into school. In 2006 I was charged with possession of marijuana, this charge was later “dismissed without consequences”. I’ve had several background checks where this charge never popped up. However, when I was fingerprinted for my BON application they found it and I had to write a letter of explanation in order to sit for the NCLEX. So this worries me a bit! Does anyone have experience with this? Could a school resend my offer of acceptance because I have a dismissed misdemeanor? Will the school even care about this? Is it worth getting it expunged? I heard it may still show up even if it is expunged. Thanks in advance for any insight and advice!

Hi @TraumaRN-CRNA2020

What state was the offense in, and what state was the BON? Each state’s BON has different procedures and is governed by different laws. Do you know what kind of background check the BON performed?

I can’t say anything about your situation specifically, if expungement is an option, it’s probably always worth pursuing. Some states still require disclosure of expunged cases (Ca), but other states are not allowed to even look at expunged cases (Pa).

Thank you for your response. My offense was in Tennessee and I also got licensed in Tennessee. My school said it was an “FBI background check” but I’m not really sure. I just know I got finger printed. I’m applying to multiple schools in multiple states. Also the charge and dismissal are over 13 years old now if that matters.

OP - I am in a similar situation. I noticed that you did get accepted to a school by viewing your profile. Did you disclose the charge to them prior to getting accepted? Have you had any issues with your background checks? Thanks!
