Been there, know this. But, I wouldn't let that stop you from being an RN. In fact, if you are still just considering ADN, there are many new Accelerated programs that will turn your prior Bach degree into a BSN faster (14 months instead of 2 yrs) and, since they are new programs, many times with less wait lists.

Look up Accel BSN programs at the Universities near you.

I looked at Acclerated BSN programs. I'm 37. I've been out of school so long that the list of pre-reqs is so large I don't see the advantage of the accelerated program for me. I'd spend 3 years getting all the pre-reqs, so I might as well go for the full BSN and transfer what I can.

This is the main reason I even consider the graduate programs.

I'm not a nurse, but I have worked in health care for some time. As far as I know working in specialties and bedside nursing jobs, your BFA is not a factor in moving up the ladder, so the above poster is correct. On the other hand, outside of bedside nursing a Bachelors (BA or BS) or a Masters in something outside of nursing is valuable and not looked down upon.

I was told by both administrators that are Registered Nurses and administrators that are not Registered Nurses that they prefer to hire me with my BA and MBA as oppose to a BSN or MSN if they had a choice despite the fact I will not have much experience bedside. The reason I was given is that my educational background and work experience in business and other areas of health care would make me look as if I have potential to be a manager with broad focus and more then one perspective.

I was also told by several Registered Nurses that too much of a bedside nursing background might hinder my chances to move beyond middle management. It sounded odd to me at the time but after reading a lot of informative complaints by bedside nurses having problems with management, I see there is some truth to what I was told.

I am planning to obtain a BSN eventually but it is for my own benefit since I may choose to take positions that prefer a BSN to my ADN. I will not obtain a MSN or doctorate in nursing because my career is focused on the business side of health care and I do not need those degrees to move forward in my career.

However, since your goals are different then mine I would do more research and gain more experience even as a tech or CNA in your area of choice. By the way, I do not know if a BFA is on the same level as a BS or BA because there are many Accelerated programs that will not accept BFAs. So be sure to check that out too. Good luck.

I am going the ADN then RN-BSN route for financial reason. I am done with my pre-reqs and co-reqs. I am waiting on acceptance to the class that starts this Spring. In the meantime I am taking pre-reqs for the RN-BSN bridge to kill time and keep my mind fresh. Good luck to you!!!

I know how you feel. It seems like it will take forever when you look at the list. But the time flies! It only feels like forever when you don't start. Good luck! :wink2:

i know you didn't ask specifically about this, but as a side note... if you get your ADN & later decide to go back to get your masters, a lot of grad schools take nurses with a BSN as well as nurses with an ADN and a BA/BS in another field.

I've been out of school a long time and basically it comes down to a lot of unsure options. (i.e. do you get in and when?) I noticed the masters programs for non-nursing majors understandably have far fewer applicants. The associates programs I've looked at function essentially by lottery. 1000 qualified applicants for 100 spots.

Makes it very difficult to plan anything for certain since you don't know. On top of that is the whole MSN, BSN, ADN mess.

MBA2BRN has some good thoughts. Unfortunately because I am older and have other financial obiligations, I simply cannot AFFORD to work as a CNA or technician. $10.00/hr just won't cut it.

I am older too and completely agree about the $10.00 CNA....I actually did fill out an application to try to do this because a girl in my A & P 1 class does this and told me they desperately needed people. I filled out the online application and was laughing the they are going to wonder why the heck I am going from a very well paying middle management position in business, so a $10.00 per hour job working 11 - 7 at night.......I wonder what they think when they see applications like this...

(I am loosing my job this spring because of a corporate buyout/consolidation so am changing careers)
