Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone was happened to have done the above course?

I am going to apply for next intake in 2012. I am currently an EEN and I am finding it so difficult to find a job thats not in aged care, currently unemployed. Im 28 and live out of home so while I am doing the above course I will need to be working a few shifts (maybe agency) during the week to help pay for rent, food, bills and my debt!

I eventually plan to become and Maternal and Child Health Nurse!:o

What are your thoughts on this?

Dana is this a combined degree? If u are finding it difficult to find work and you have experience, definitely contact all the nursing agencies near you, and they will get u work where and when u need it. I do agency RN work and my phone rings off the hook! I've also been offered jobs all over Australia and one in Adelaide. So if you do combined nursing and mid, you will have no problems with work.

What state are you in and what uni are you going thru? Will u be internal or external or a combination of both?

Caza

Hi Caza,

This is a double degree I want to study at Deakin Uni in Burwood (melbourne). It's full-time internal and I think 15-20 contact hours a week.

Trying to find work as an endorsed enrolled nurse is ridiculous...! There's nothing out there but aged care or agency, even then sometimes u don't get called for days.. I love babies and hope to be a maternal and child health nurse oneday! Just not keen on watching people have them but if I have to to get where I want to be then so be it!

I have done agency plenty of times before and I despise it lol...

I was just wondering if it would be possible to work during this double degree and study?

I can't believe in Melb you would find it hard to get work as an EEN. I've worked with many EENs and they always get work here in Adelaide and in Perth.

Maybe you could try different agencies - it took me a little while to find a good one here in Adelaide. I do shifts when I want, I set the times and dates. My agency is fantastic.

I found internal study boring actually. I did that for 1 year, and then changed to exernal. I had more freedom with work. You need to sit down and write down all your other commitments and see if you can fit in work with everything else that takes up ur time. The contact hours don't seem like much - is this right?

Also what about time you need to take for ur clinicals? How many hours is that and you won't be able to work during clinicals.

But if u really want something you just have to knuckle down and do it. If you don't get into the RN/mid course, just do the Ba of Nursing. In SA you can choose up to 6 different courses when you apply anyway.

Let us know if u get in :)

Its hard to find work that's not in aged care and that's not agency I mean. While agency is convenient it isn't my cup of tea! I'm fussy when it comes to what type of nursing I want to do!!

For clinicals I would hope to be able to work as much as possible during school holidays to save for the time I'd be at clinicals. 15-20 compulsory contact hours weekly is full-time study ive been told..

I'm sure I can do anything I put my mind too! :-)

Great idea to do this as a double degree, especially as you want to do M&CH. When its time to do M&C quals, try nd get sponsorship from a council to help pay for the postgrad study. To get out of the aged care sector, maybe contact hospital banks or a local private hospital or GP practice. Highly recommend Deakin, my daughter did double degree of nursing/psychology at Burwood and loved it.

Hi joanne

Thank you for ur response...

Was ur daughter able to work whilst doing the double degree?
