Baby Nurse Career

Published

Hi! I need some information on a particular field of nursing. At the hospital, an hour before my son was born, a nurse came in and introduced herself as the "baby nurse" and explained what she would be doing. The moment my son was delivered, and for his first ten minutes, she was the one taking care of him: his vitals, measurements, Apgar Score, etc. I have decided to pursue nursing, and her job is the exact nursing position I'd like to have. Is this officially called a "baby nurse"? Do these nurses primarily work in the nursery and then come out to rooms for initial care? What education do you need?(I know this depends on the state maybe, I live in Las Vegas, NV).

Thanks so much for your help.

These positions are usually called Transition nurses, and in many hospitals they are also trained Labor nurses as well, or atleast that is my understanding. On my unit, one of the Labor Nurses is assigned to be the transition nurse, and transitions babies, but she can also be a Labor nurse as well.

I'm pretty positive that the "baby nurse" was a labor and delivery nurse (providing care to moms and babies during the antepartum, intrapartum, transition, and sometimes postpartum periods).

Sometimes labor and delivery nurses will focus care on the newborn right at delivery and immediately afterwards. Sometimes it will be the pediatrician or peds residents. Sometimes it's both.

If you want to be a "baby nurse," you should look into working on a mother/baby unit. If you want to focus only on babies, then maybe consider the NICU.

Good luck! :)

At the hospital that I am doing clinicals at the person is called a transition nurse. She ultimately works in the special care nursery and is called a few minutes before the birth. After the birth she does the 1 and 5 minute Apgars, takes vitals, adminsters Vitamin K and eye ointment.

At our hospital, the Nursery/Postpartum nurse comes to delivery to recover babe.
