Hi everyone! I wanted to make a chat for those applying to AVC for the Spring 2023 application. How is everyone doing?

The first 6 weeks you will be in the skills lab and I know the schedule says 6:50am to 1pm but you will need to plan on staying later to work on your skills. And by skills I mean: learning where all the places pulses can be taken, taking vital signs, giving a bed bath, doing a head to toe physical assessment, learning how to do range of motion (ROM) exercises on a patient, learning how to log roll a patient, learning how to insert a catheter both indwelling and straight catheter, learning how to insert an NG tube and start a tube feeding, learning how to do a sterile dressing change on both a decubitus wound and a pen rose, learning how to give a patient an enema and a Harris flush, learning how to transfer a patient from the bed to a wheelchair, and I'm probably missing something, LOL. It's a lot and you will get tested on what you learn by performing a Practicum in front of you instructor. You have to pass it in order to continue in the program and in week 7 you will start clinicals at either Antelope Valley Hospital or Palmdale Regional Medical Center. All that I just described is only lab and clinical. You will also have lectures and tests. The tests will be unlike any test you've seen. Not only do you need to learn the material but you need to be able to critically think about what you have learned. There will be more then one right answer but you have to pick the most correct. I suggest looking up sample questions for Nursing Fundamentals to get an idea. If you have any more questions just let me know.

I have another quick question, did you actually use all the books they require you to buy? I usually find my books online, but I was wondering if you have to bring them to class with you, or if you really need them. Some classes don’t even touch a book, but IDK if it’s different for these courses. Thank you in advance! ?

Hi! Do those who got accepted mind sharing stats! ?

I actually don’t think I have that good of stats compared to everyone else, but I had a 4.0 in my gen ED classes, I don’t know my science GPA but I got B’s in micro, anatomy, physiology, and an A in Chemistry. 80 on my TEAS. I got extra points with being bilingual and being a CNA. I hope that helps ?

Specializes in RN student.

Hi Iggie,

The only books that I actually used were the Fundamental of Nursing text book and the Fundamental of Nursing Skills book. I did use the textbook quite a bit. I didn't need to bring it to class. Keep in mind some of the textbooks they tell you to buy, you will need for other semesters. I know that luckily for you all, you have Professor Snyder. I had Professor Cota, you can look up her reviews on rate my professor to see why this is a good thing that you don't have her. But for me I studied the PowerPoints more than any other material and it worked out well for me. I ended the semester with a B which most barely passed with Cs, so I was lucky that I found what worked for me. If there was something on the PowerPoints that I didn't understand I would look it up in the textbook. Out of the 40 of us who started the semester, only 30 made it to the end. So make sure you study, study, study. Also practice Nursing style test questions. Nursing school tests are unlike any other. If you have any more questions, just let me know. I'm happy to help ❤

Hi! I had a 3.9 in my pre-reqs, 3.68 overall. I received an 82 on my TEAS and I am currently an EMT. I also volunteered at my local community hospital. And I do have a B.S. in Business Administration.

Wow. That sounds stressful ? thanks for answering my questions! Good luck on your upcoming semester

Hello, not sure if anyone will see this as I know this is a old forum but just curious, to those who got in the nursing program did you have to have health insurance to be able to  be fully accepted into the nursing program? Or were you able to do the program without it?

I had insurance, but I never had to show any proof that I had any.
