Australian nurses registering in california help!

World International

Published

hi,

i am a nursing student who is just about to finish my bns in australia. i am married to an american and want to practice in california. i have been in contract with the board in california and they keep giving me different information.

so far this is what i have heard:

1. it takes up to a year to process an internation application, after which you can take the national exam and get registered.

2. if the board is not happy with your study, they will tell you what extra courses you have to take. ie. pediatric nursing class. however, i don't understand how you can take just a single class after you have graduated.

3. there are no public available documents to tell you what they are looking for.

4. you can not apply until you have graduated your program in australia and have recieve registration from your home country.

i am seeking any advice. any past experiences. i want to give my self the best opportunity for sucess.

many many thanks

melanie

Hi,

I am an Australian educated RN from Sydney.

I have a green card and received my letter from the California Board of Registered Nursing after about 6 months....

And yes, it states that I do not meet their requirements in Pediatrics and

Obstetrics.

Finding a school that is nearby (San Diego) and familiar with my situation is proving difficult, as they are geared up for new students.

Has anyone actually taken any remedial classes - and in a reasonable amount of time? It is incredible that it could take a year to do this. And at what cost :no:

Check with various community colleges in your area, those are the ones where you can easily get into a class to complete your work. But you need to apply to them as a guest student since you are not getting a degree from there but only need the training to be on a transcript to meet the requirements of the BRN. Each of the classes takes about six weeks to complete.

In the Bay Area, there are quite a few that have done this in the past, you may wish to check with the Community College of San Mateo, CCSM.

If you have a green card, then it is just what the rate would be for your area.

Did you try the PDU courses at Deakin? Also, did you get offered a Limited license or no license at all

CA will not permit one to do anything here, or offer any type of temporary registration if the missing hours are not completed first.

When one receives a limited permit, or IP here, it means that they have met all requirements for licensure but just have not sat for the NCLEX-RN exam.

The hours will need to be completed before they will even look at your application to process it.
